Chennai Super Kings campaign in IPL 2026 has finally ended in disappointing way after Gujarat Titans defeated them by huge 89 runs at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This was a do or die encounter for CSK as their hopes of making it to the playoffs were still alive before this encounter but this heavy loss officially ended their journey.
This season has been frustrating for Chennai fans right from the word go.Team was never looking fully settled and injuries kept creating problems again and again. Whenever CSK started getting little momentum, another setback was coming in front of them.
This is also third consecutive season where five time IPL champions failed to qualify for playoffs. For a team like Chennai Super Kings, who always known for consistency and handling pressure moments better than anyone, this phase feels very unusual.
Gujarat Titans Batters Completely Dominated Match
Gujarat Titans looked confident from first over itself. Batting first, their openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill attacked CSK bowlers without any fear. Chennai bowlers was struggling badly to control runs during powerplay and Titans took full advantage of that situation.
Both openers added 125 runs partnership for first wicket and completely shifted pressure towards Chennai side. Sai Sudharsan played brilliant innings of 84 runs while captain Shubman Gill scored 64 runs confidently.
After first wicket fall, Jos Buttler continued same momentum and played attacking cricket till end. He remained unbeaten on 57 runs and helped Gujarat Titans post massive total of 229 runs in 20 overs.
From CSK side, bowling attack never looked in control. Bowlers missed yorkers repeatedly and fielding mistakes also made things more difficult. In middle overs also Chennai failed to break momentum quickly and Titans batters kept finding boundaries regularly.
Chennai Batting Failed Under Pressure Again
While chasing huge target, Chennai Super Kings got worst possible beginning after Sanju Samson got out for duck. That early wicket increased pressure immediately because required run rate was already very high.
Even though CSK batters tried to attack aggressively, wickets kept falling continuously from other side. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada bowled with lot of intensity and destroyed top order during powerplay itself.
At one stage Chennai score became 63 for 5 in only seven overs. From there match almost looked finished. Shivam Dube played explosive knock of 47 runs from just 17 balls and gave little hope to supporters, but no other batter stayed long enough with him.
Rashid Khan also joined wicket taking party later and Gujarat bowlers never allowed CSK to build any proper partnership. Finally Chennai got all out for just 140 runs in 13.4 overs and lost match badly.
Injuries Damaged CSK Season Completely
Honestly, biggest reason behind Chennai poor campaign this year was injuries of important players. Team combinations was changing almost every few matches and management never got enough time to settle same playing eleven.
Jamie Overton injury became massive setback during second half of tournament. He was helping team with both bat and ball and also bringing balance in bowling attack. After he got ruled out, Chennai bowling started looking weaker than before.
Apart from him, players like Nathan Ellis, Ayush Mhatre, Khaleel Ahmed, Ramakrishna Ghosh and even MS Dhoni faced injury problems during different stages of season. Because of all these issues, team management continuously forced to make changes.
Main problem was that injuries came during important moments. Each time Chennai looked to make a comeback in the playoff race, another player was going to be unavailable.
CSK showed improvement while on middle stage of IPL 2026 but poor start and continuous injury setback finally pushed them out of tournament. For Chennai fans, this season is definitely going to feel like one big missed opportunity.
