Life is a complex phenomenon. It is governed by laws and principles that are not easily configured on a personal capacity. Many variables and regular forces interface to produce results. As an upshot, one plus one may not readily yield the expected result. You can see an exceptional hardworking person ending up a failure. A compound nonentity by happenstance will be seen at the top. Jeremiah told his audience, *"it is not within the power of man to map his life and plan his course"* (Jeremiah 10:23, LB). He also says in the previous chapter, *"Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom, nor the valiant of his valour; Let not the rich man boast of his riches, but if any man would boast, let him boast of this, that he understands and knows Me"* (Jeremiah 9:23,NEB).
In our text, Herod overstretched his splendour, and forgot he waa but a mortal, a small angel reminded him, and he dropped dead and was finished off by worms. Then the word of God increased at the point he ended. This reminds me of an experience i had in 1970's when i traveled home to my home town, Asaga ohafia, on a holiday. There was a crusade at the civic center, the speaker was Brother Tony Ewelike, as he then was an interpreter for Bro Uma Ukpai, as he then was called. As i was about entering our house, I heard a young man making jest of the crusaders, as noisemakers and never-do-wells. He said, if he was given one week, he would produce a better book than the Bible which they were making noise about. I was only in class one but was highly infuriated. I made enquiries about the man, I was told he just came back from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and made first class in Civil Engineering.
After some years, i graduated from University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and started work. After few years later i came back on holidays, almost at the point the crusade was held, i stopped to exchange pleasantries with those at home. A man ran to the car half-clad. As i looked through the fully rolled up car window, it was the 1st class Civil Engineer, the man that was supposed to produce a better book than the Bible in one week. He had become insane and was eating from the dust bins and living at the mercy of the masses. Those who made noise about God, God had lifted them to world-class superstars in their chosen professions. Ambassador Tony Ewelike retired as a Bank CEO and Rev Dr Uma Ukpai is one of the most anointed God's Generals of our time. God respects those who respect Him but those who despise Him, He treats as nothing. The first-class Engr. died a mad man; he never married, and had no legacy for his generation
Be careful of how you speak, think and see things that matters to God and His people
May God help us to be humble at all cost
God bless you
