Top Reason Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio Production Is Extended for Another Year

Alfa Romeo has been selling the Giulia and Stelvio models in the United States for a decade now, and according to the brand's CEO, Santo Ficili, both models are being extended for another year. According to a new report from Motor1, Ficili made the announcement as part of the reveal of the facelifted Tonale subcompact SUV.

The cars aren't being extended on a whim, but will instead bridge the gap until Alfa is ready to bring their now-delayed replacements to market, which is expected to be in 2027. As things stand now, both the Giulia and Stelvio ride on the same Giorgio platform that they launched on 10 years ago.

The reason for the delay is that while Alfa Romeo had initially planned for the second-generation versions of both models to launch exclusively with electric powertrains, the company is now walking back that plan. As with so many other automakers, Alfa Romeo is balking at the current EV adoption rates and backpedaling to what it knows will perform: internal-combustion engines.

So the current generations of both the sedan and SUV are being pushed out another year while Alfa Romeo adapts the STLA Large platform that will underpin the next Giulia and Stelvio with combustion engines. The standard versions are expected to use the same Hurricane twin-turbocharged inline-six as the Dodge Charger Sixpack that they'll share a platform with. Alfa Romeo has also hinted at the return of the Quadrifoglio versions, both of which could use Maserati's current V-6.
