A cat is a mammal.  Cats are domesticated and domesticated by humans.  Domesticated cats also eat a vegetarian diet.  Since cats were sacred animals in ancient Egypt, they were commonly kept and worshiped at home.  When cats died, the Egyptians built pyramids for them and buried some rats.  Kings and their cats were assigned places in the pyramids.

Anatomy of a male cat

Cats typically weigh 2.5 to 7 kilograms (5.5–16 pounds).  Small cats weigh less than 1.8 kg (4.0 pounds).  Some cat breeds, such as the Maine Coon, occasionally grow to over 11 kilograms.  There have also been cats weighing 21 kilograms as a world record.  Similarly, the smallest old cat in the world weighed almost 1 kg .Peral cats are often emaciated due to their poor food intake.  The average male feral cat in the Boston area weighs 4 kilograms.  The average female feral cat weighs 3 kilograms . Cats have an average height of 23 to 25 cm (9-10 in) and a head/body length of 46 cm (18 in).  Male cats are generally larger than female cats.  A cat's tail is on average 30 cm (12 in) long.

Cats have 30 vertebrae (humans have 33).  Cats with fine hearing have 32 muscle fibers in their ears.  Cats' loudest vibration is 64 kHz.They sleep 12-16 hours a day.  Normal body temperature ranges from 38 – 39 °C (101 – 102.2 °F).  Cats have a rapid reproductive rate.

 A cat's forelegs are connected by floating ribs.  So cats can fit their bodies into any small space their heads can fit.  Cats have five claws on their front feet and four claws on their hind feet.  Cats have a cushion-like foot structure to prevent sound transmission when they walk.  The consuming sense is 14 times that of a human.  Cats cannot taste sweet because their tongues do not have sweet taste buds.  Cats have lost this ability due to genetics.  Cats recognize other tastes.  Cats carry their young for up to two months.  A cat can have up to 150 kittens in its lifetime.

Cat's skull

 The cat's skull differs from that of typical mammals.  Large eye sockets and strong and specialized jaws distinguish the cat from other animals 35.  The 35 teeth in the jaw are adapted for feeding and shredding flesh.  The two long fangs deliver a fatal pressure bite to the neck of the prey, causing severe damage to the vertebrae and spinal cord, severing and piercing it.  This leads to paralysis and death from irreversible paralysis[9].  This system enables it to easily capture its favorite rodents. Both the premolars and first molars form a pair on either side of the mouth and perform the scissor-like function of cutting meat into pieces.  Cats are efficient feeders.  This type of tooth structure and nutrition is essential because cats 'cannot chew food with their small molars, and cats are often unfit to chew their food 37.

Cat Communication 

Cats need to communicate with each other for bonding, and relating with each other; they need to collaborate, play, and share resources. When they communicate with humans, they do so to get what they need or want, such as food, affection, or play.

Cats use a range of communication methods such as vocal, visual, tactile and olfactory. Cats mostly meow to communicate with humans, rarely with other animals. As such, the cats' communication methods have been significantly affected by domestication. Up to 21 different cat vocalizations have been studied.It is now evident that domestic cats meow more than feral cats.

Domestication of the Cat

The domestic cat originated from Near-Eastern and Egyptian populations of the African wildcat, Felis sylvestris lybica. The family Felidae, to which all living feline species belong, arose about ten to eleven million years ago. This family is divided into eight major phylogenetic lineages. The domestic cat is a member of the Felis lineage.[1] A number of investigations have shown that all domestic varieties of cats come from a single species of the Felis lineage, Felis catus. Variations of this lineage are found all over the world, and until recently scientists have had a hard time pinning down exactly which region gave rise to modern domestic cat breeds. Scientists believed that it was not just one incident that led to the domesticated cat but multiple, independent incidents at different places that led to these breeds. More complications arose from the fact that the wildcat population as a whole is very widespread and very similar to one another. These variations of wildcat can and will interbreed freely with one another when in close contact, further blurring the lines between taxa.[2] Recent DNA studies, advancement in genetic technologies, and a better understanding of DNA and genetics as a whole has helped make discoveries in the evolutionary history of the domestic cat. Archaeological evidence has documented earlier dates of domestication than formerly believed.
