He also hinted that while Avatar 2 is still in post-production, the filming of Avatar 4 is going well and that the material from Weta FX, who are in charge of the film's CGI and other visual effects, looked spectacular. This mining and colony expansion threatens the Na'vi, a tribe of humanoid creatures native to the moon. A marine remotely operates a genetically engineered Na'vi body and uses this body to interact with the Pandora natives. Along the way, he learns appreciation for the Na'vi and falls in love with a member of the tribe. Avatar has been planned to theatrically re-release in its remastered version on September 23. The second installment, Avatar: The Way of Water has been scheduled to hit the screens on December 16

Cameron, who had stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in 2010 following the widespread success of the first film, with The Way of Water aiming for a 2014 release.[8][9] However, the addition of three more sequels (to the first one) and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, preproduction, and visual effects.[10] Preliminary shooting for the film started in Manhattan Beach, California, on August 15, 2017, followed by principal photography simultaneously with Avatar 3 in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming concluded in late September 2020, after over three years of shooting, despite production being interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
