The Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCC I, on Friday announced that the Indian Premier League 2022 season will get underway on March 26 and the final will be played on May 29. The 10-team season in I PL, 2022 will have 74 matches, including 70 league stage matches which will be played across four venues in Mumbai and Pune.
BCC I secretary Jay Shah confirmed the schedule for I PL 2022 after the, I PL Governing Council Meeting which was held virtually on Thursday.
The BCC I said I PL 2022 will be played in a bio-secure environment and the decision to pick only two host cities was taken to "avoid air travel which is considered as a major threat for the spread of Covid-19 infection, thereby affecting the players and the League/matches."
The 10 teams will play a total of 14 league matches (7 home matches and 7 away matches) totaling to 70 league matches, followed by the 4 playoff matches. Each team will play 5 teams twice, and the remaining 4 teams only once (2 only home and 2 only away).
The venues for the play-offs and the final will be decide to a later date, the BCC I added,The 10 teams have been drawn into 2 groups 5 each. Mumbai Indians headline Group A while Chennai Super Kings are headlining Group B. To decide on the above, teams have been assigned in two virtual groups based on the number of I PL Championships won followed by the number of Final matches played by the respective teams.
Last year only 8 teams had played the, I PL matches, which were Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore & Sunrises Hyderabad. The new two which are going to be the parts of Indian Premier League 15 are Ahmedabad Lions & Lucknow Noways.
Names of stadium where 15th Edition of Indian Premier League is scheduled to be played are Wanked Stadium, M.A. Chidambaram Check Stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium, Fer oz Shah Kola Stadium, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Eden Gardens Stadium & BRS ABV kana Cricket Stadium.
