The name "Bluetooth" was proposed in 1997 by Jim Karachi of Intel, one of the founders of the Bluetooth SIG. The title was inspired by an interview with Sven Mattisson, who told Scandinavian history through the stories of The Long Ships by Fran, G. Bengtsson, a historical novel about the Vikings and the 10th century Danish king Harald Bluetooth. After discovering an image of the Harald Bluetooth rune stone[9] in Gwyn Jones' A History of the Vikings, Jim proposed Bluetooth as a code -name for a short-range wireless program now called Bluetooth.[10][11] [12] According to the official Bluetooth website Bluetooth was only meant to be a placeholder until marketing came up with something really cool. Later, when it came time to choose a serious name, Bluetooth was to be replaced by either Radio Wire or PAN (Personal Area Networking). PAN was the pioneer, but an exhaustive search revealed that he already had tens of thousands of hits all over the internet. A full trademark search on Radio Wire could not be completed in time for launch, so Bluetooth is the only option. The name quickly caught on, and before it could be changed, it spread throughout the industry and became synonymous with short-range wireless technology.[13] Bluetooth is the anglicized version of the Scandinavian Blatant. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology standard used to exchange data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances and to build personal area networks (PAN). It uses UHF radio waves in the ISM bands from 2.402 GHz to 2.48 GHz.[3] It is mainly used as an alternative to wired connection, to exchange files between nearby portable devices and to connect mobile phones and music players using wireless headphones. In the most extended mode, transmission power is limited to 2.5 milliwatts, giving it a very short range of up to 10 meters (33 feet). Bluetooth is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which has more than 35,000 member companies in the fields of telecommunications, computing, networking and consumer electronics. The IEEE standardized Bluetooth as IEEE 802.15.1, but no longer maintains this standard. The Bluetooth SIG oversees specification development, administers the qualification program, and protects trademarks.[4] A manufacturer must comply with Bluetooth SIG standards in order to market it as a Bluetooth device.[5] The technology is covered by a network of patents that are licensed to individual qualifying devices. As of 2009, approximately 920 million Bluetooth IC chips are shipped annually.[6] By 2017, 3.6 billion Bluetooth devices had shipped annually, and shipments expected to continue to grow at approximately 12% per year.[7] In 2021, shipments reached 4.7 billion units with a forecast growth of 9%.
