There are seven ways your food can impact and enhance your mental health.

Contrary to popular belief, metabolism and mitochondrial function appears to have a much greater impact on mental health.

 

 

The brain can be significantly impacted by diet. Despite a large corpus of research examining how when and what we eat impacts our mitochondria and metabolism, relatively few studies have examined the relationship between nutrition and mental health. The metabolism and mitochondria are directly impacted by what we consume when we eat, and how much we eat. Everyone is aware that diet has an impact on obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The majority of individuals might be unaware of the significant impacts nutrition has on the brain and mental health.

 

This area is really large. The effects of nutrition on metabolism and mitochondria have been examined in tens of thousands of research publications and many textbooks. Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, aging, and longevity have been the main topics of this research. However, these researchers frequently fail to recognize the link to mental health.

Correlations are not the extent of the connections. In another study, unique GABA and serotonin brain circuits that were directly connected to obesity, anxiety, and depression were found. How much you weigh and how you feel are influenced by the same brain circuit.

Some people refer to this area of study, which considers how diet affects mental health, as nutritional psychiatry. I think this is overly restricted. It goes beyond how nutrition impacts cognitive function. Additionally, it concerns how our mental emotions affect our metabolism, which in turn influences hunger and eating habits, which in turn impacts general health. It is a two-way relationship. Both physiological and mental processes are impacted by one another.

Using dietary changes to treat mental symptoms can be beneficial in at least seven different ways:

 

1.       Addressing nutritional inadequacies including a lack of thiamine, floated, and vitamin B12.

2.       Removing poisons or allergens from food. For instance, some people have Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and other metabolic issues in response to gluten. This may impair the brain activity. I've already discussed how harmful TFAs are. Numerous more food components can also harm mitochondrial function.

3.       For some people, adopting a "healthy diet," like the Mediterranean diet, may be helpful.

4.       Improving the microbiota of the gut.

5.       Enhancing mitochondrial activity and metabolism through dietary changes. This includes adjustments to metabolic rate, insulin resistance, the number of mitochondria in cells, the condition of mitochondria generally, hormones, inflammation, and a variety of other recognized regulators of metabolism.

6.       Obesity-related problems can be lessened with weight loss.

Additionally, there is proof that fasting, intermittent fasting (IF), and diets that imitate fasting may be used to treat mental illnesses.
