This is surprising considering how many balding men there are who deserve a decent haircut as much as anyone else
In the face of this injustice, I've put together my own guide to men's balding hairstyles
It is a fact that 95% of all bald or balding men suffer from male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness usually begins with a receding hairline in the front and is often accompanied by thinning on top.
Over time, this thinning turns into full-blown baldness, and the baldness grows to cover the head, except for the sides and around the back.
Regardless, as long as I have a single hair left on my head, I will still require a stylish hairstyle. So, what balding hairstyle options are available?
The worst male pattern balding hairstyle is the comb over. This is a classic look loved by men of a certain age, where the hair grows longer on one side of the head and sweeps over the bald spot to the other side.
This strategy spells disaster with the slightest breeze and should be avoided at all costs.
But assuming you already know that, what are the other options and not to do balding men's hairstyles?
The first common mistake is combing the hair straight back. This can cover bald spots, but only exposes the forehead and draws attention to the receding hairline.
The second is hair extensions at the back to replace what is missing on top. This leads to an imbalance of the head and draws even more attention to the scalp and baldness.
Younger men with thinning hair may be tempted to use gel, but this is not recommended. The gel clumps the hair and exposes the scalp.
Similarly, growing long hair in an attempt to cover up actually causes the hair to separate and expose more of the scalp.
So, what are the benefits?
Get a more natural hair lift with foams and conditioners.
Grow the rest of your hair a few inches, layer it and brush it forward to break the receding hairline.
If your hairline isn't receding much, but the top of your head is thinning, you can get away with leaving the front long and combing your hair straight back to cover the bald spot.
Eventually, however, your bald spot will expand.
The ultimate balding men's hairstyle when faced with a shiny bald dome is to go the whole hog and shave it, or at least trim it very closely.
You will probably be amazed at the reactions from people and the compliments you will get that the shaved look is a completely acceptable bald hairstyle these days.
Start with electric scissors like those found at barber shops. After you cut the tough stuff, lather up with some shaving gel. This gives you a smoother, smoother shave than shaving cream.
Then use the razor to start at the top and shave down with the grain at the back - it's recommended to watch what you're doing with a small mirror.
Shaving your head only takes a few minutes, and you don't have to do it every day (two to three times a week is fine).
Taking care of a newly shaved head is similar to taking care of your face. Wash regularly with a moisturizing soap, rather than a harsh deodorant that can dry out the scalp.
Also use a quality moisturizer after every wash, cheaper moisturizers will only clog your pores.
For summer, find a moisturizer with a sun protection factor of at least 15 to avoid burning your head. And in winter, you'll need a warm hat to keep your body warm.
If shaving doesn't tickle your fancy, you can always opt for a hairpiece as a last resort - although I wouldn't recommend it
