India defeated West Indies by six wickets in the first One-Day International in Ahmedabad, thanks to Yuzvendra Chahal's precise bowling and some superb hitting from Rohit Sharma at the top. Rohit scored his 44th ODI fifty, as he and Ishan Kishan combined 84 runs for the first wicket. The Indian captain was dismissed for 60 (51), and Virat Kohli followed him to the pavilion on 8. Ishan scored 28 runs (36), and Rishabh Pant was the last hitter to be dismissed on 11 runs (9). Suryakumar Yadav's 34(36) and debutant Deepak Hooda's 26(32) put the finishing touches on the 177-run chase, which was completed in just 28 overs.

Earlier in the day, Yuzvendra Chahal took four wickets as Team India bowled out the West Indies for 176 runs. Windies got off to a sluggish start after being requested to bat first, with Mohammed Siraj dismissing Shai Hope early. After that, Washington Sundar entered the fray and took two wickets. West Indies kept losing wickets in the middle overs, and at one point, they were 79/7. However, the Windies were able to post a respectable total because to the astute batting of Jason Holder and Fabien Allen. Holder was fired after 57 years on the job (71). Sundar took three wickets, while Prasidh Krishna took two wickets among the pacers.

Rohit Sharma said in the post match ceremony - "I don't believe in perfect game. You cannot be perfect. We want to keep getting better. All in all a great effort from everyone. We ticked all boxes. Pretty happy with that. With that bat we could've finished with not so many wickets, that is one. Could also have created pressure on their lower order. Don't want to take any credit away. The way we bowled upfront and then towards the back end was good to see. We want to keep getting better as a team. The end goal is we should be able to achieve what the team wants. If the team requires us to do something different, have to do it. Don't think we have to change a lot. All I ask from players is to keep challenging themselves. I've been off for a while, haven't played for two months but I was back home hitting the balls. Knew there was a long season ahead. Had a good net session here. I was confident going into this game."

Cairns wrote on Instagram--

"I was told yesterday I have bowel cancer…big shock and not what I was expecting after what was supposed to be a routine checkup.

"So, as I prepare for another round of conversations with surgeons and specialists, I keep remembering how lucky I am to be here in the first place…and how blessed I am to have all that I do in my life. Wasn't all bad this week either, managed to get in some kids sport and celebrate (son) Noah's birthday at home.

"Another fight ahead but here's hoping this one is a swift upper cut and over in the first round."

Cairns had an aortic dissection after a cardiac attack in August of last year. During that time, he was also on life support and had a stroke in his spine, which left him paralysed in his legs. Between 1989 and 2006, Cairns, the son of veteran Test player Lance Cairns, played 62 Tests and 215 ODIs for New Zealand.
