Benefits of Science and Technology
There have been many obvious benefits of science and technological advancement. Scientific advancements in medical technology, such as the invention of penicillin, allowed diseases such as syphilis, tonsillitis, acute rheumatic fever, gangrene, and gonorrhea to be easily treated or cured. As well, vaccines have cured and prevented diseases such as polio and small pox. These technological advancements, along with other medical advancements, have saved countless lives and improved the lives of numerous patients.

Technological advancements have made preserving food easier, which makes shipping food cheaper and easier. This has increased the availability of clean water and clean food across the globe while decreasing starvation and increasing the diversity of food choices and options. Technological advancements in vehicles, flight, and travel has bridged gaps between many cultures which may have not been easily accessible to one another.
Technology has not only extended lives and increased health and reach, it has also made life easier, more entertaining, and has provided individuals with more choice. Technological advancements led to the invention of computers, the internet, and smart phones and have, therefore, connected billions of lives. These advancements have made things like education and literacy more attainable and cultural influence among various cultures more abundant. The internet is even advancing and becoming more decentralized and, with the advent of blockchain technology like bitcoin, can even separate governmental power from controlling currency thereby further decentralizing power and increasing the freedom of the average person.
Bitcoin and blockchain technology is one of the more recent technological advancements in recent history.
Though technology has saved many lives and has made freedom, choice, and literacy more accessible, technology is not intrinsically or inherently good or ethical. Technological advancements can be utilized poorly, irresponsibly, and even maliciously.
Risks of Using Technology
There are many risks to technological advancement in addition to benefits. As previously mentioned, automation can easily lead to the loss of jobs. If it is cheaper for an employer to purchase, maintain, and run automated equipment than to pay a salary to a person, then they will be incentivized to replace humans with automated technology. This can lead to a huge spike in unemployment. Other technologies also bring ethical concerns, e.g., stem cell research, which has sometimes been extracted from human fetuses; however this has recently been discovered to be attainable elsewhere.
Technology has also had more obvious ethical problems with its advancement. For example, advancements in nuclear physics led to the invention of nuclear fission reactor technology, which is an extremely clean and efficient source of energy and electricity. However, the same knowledge also led the nuclear physicist Oppenheimer and others toward the invention of the atomic bomb during the Manhattan Project. This invention changed the course of history entirely and cost the lives of hundreds of thousands at the end of the Pacific Campaign during World War II.
Technological advancement occurs when technologies or applied sciences become more precise, accurate, efficient, or more powerful or capable. Scientific and technological advancements have made many important changes throughout history, some better than others
