THE EARTH CYCLE
He created the heavens and the earth by Truth. He wraps the night around the day, wraps the day with the night. (Qur'an, 39: 5)
In the Qur'an, the words used to describe the universe are very remarkable. The Arabic word translated “wrap” in the verse above is “T-AKK A WEER”. In English, it means “to make one thing over another, wrapped up like a garment”. (In Arabic dictionaries, for example, the word is used in the sense of wrapping one thing over another, as in the case of a hat.)
The information given in the verse about day and night coexistence includes accurate knowledge of geography. This can only be true if the earth is round. This means that in the Qur'an, which was revealed in the 7th century, the rotation of the earth was noted.
It must be remembered, however, that the astronomical understanding of the astronomy at that time was different from that of the earth. It was then thought that the earth was a flat plane, and that all mathematical and scientific interpretations were based on this belief. The verses in the Qur'an, however, include information we have learned only in the last century. Since the Qur'an is the word of God, the most accurate words are used in it to describe the universe.
PROTECTED ROOF
In the Qur'an, God calls our attention to the most exciting aspect of the universe:
We have made the sky a safe and secure roof, yet they are afraid of Our signs (Qur'an, 21:32).
This phenomenon has been confirmed by scientific research in the 20th century.
The atmosphere, for example, does more than provide us with air to breathe. Although it destroys many large and small meteors as it approaches the earth, it prevents them from crashing and damaging living things.
In addition, the atmosphere filters out light rays from the atmosphere that are harmful to living things. Interestingly, the atmosphere allows only harmless and useful rays - visible light, near ultraviolet light, and past radio waves. All of these rays are essential for life. Nearby ultraviolet radiation, which is allowed to enter the atmosphere, is vital for plant photosynthesis and for the survival of all living things. Most of the ultraviolet radiation from the sun is filtered out by the ozone layer of the atmosphere and is a relatively small part of the ultraviolet spectrum that reaches Earth.
The space defense function does not end here. The atmosphere also protects the earth from freezing temperatures, at about 270oC.
It is not the only atmosphere that protects the Earth from harmful effects. Above the atmosphere, the Van Allen Belt, a layer created by the Earth's magnetic field, also protects us from harmful radiation that threatens our planet. These rays, which are constantly emitted by the Sun and other stars, are lethal to living organisms. Without Van Allen's belt, a massive explosion of energy called solar flares that normally occur in the Sun would have wiped out all life on Earth.
Dr. Hugh Ross has a comment on Van Allen Belts' importance in our lives:
In fact, the Earth has the highest density of any planets in our Solar System. This huge nickel-iron core is responsible for our large magnetic field. This magnetic field produces a Van-Allen radiation shield, which protects the Earth from the effects of radioactive fallout. If this shield did not exist, life would not be possible on Earth. The only rocky planet with any magnetic field is Mercury - but its mass is 100 times lower than Earth's. Even Venus, our sister planet, has no magnetic field. Van-Allen's radiation shield is a unique design on Earth.1
The energy dissipated in one of these explosions in recent years is estimated to be the equivalent of 100 billion atomic bombs, similar to those hurled at Hiroshima. Fifty-eight hours after the explosion, it was observed that the magnetic needles of the compass indicated abnormal movement and 150 miles [250 km] above the earth's surface, and the temperature suddenly rose to 2,500o C.
In short, a complete system works higher than Earth. It surrounds our planet and protects it from external threats. Scientists have recently learned about it, but centuries ago, in the Free Articles, God introduced us to the Qur'an by the earth's atmosphere as a protective shield.
