1. Deciding to listen well:
The ability to improve the quality of one's listening depends on one's firm commitment to listening well. Thus, a developmental tendency to the speaker and his uttered words is essential to be a good listener.
2. Paying attention:
After resolving to listen carefully, it's critical to pay close attention to what's being said. The receiver's mental composition, ability to think in a disciplined manner, subject expertise, and so on all influence their ability to pay attention.
3. Thinking from the reader’s viewpoint:
To be a good listener, you must try to think like the speaker, judging the speaker's words based on the speaker's knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, among other things.
4. Trying to remember consciously:
Good listening takes deliberate efforts to remember the words heard. Though human mental recall power is limited, it is possible to boost it by paying attention to and intentionally hearing the speaker's words.
5. Evaluating the Speech:
Because the listener's thinking is faster than the speaker's speaking, the listener has adequate time to evaluate what is being said, and the facts offered to support the speaker's major argument. The listener can evaluate the speaker's speech by comparing these signals and facts to their own knowledge. The process of such a review can help you listen more effectively.
6. Taking Selective Notes:
The listener can jot down some key points from the speaker's presentation for later review and reference. However, if the listener attempts to record the entire speech, he may miss out on vital details. As a result, it's best to jot down only the speech's essential points, keywords, key information, and references. The listener's note-taking attempts will undoubtedly rise.
7. Avoiding forming an opinion too quickly:
Listeners should not form quick judgments on the speaker's thoughts. Rather, they should pay close attention to the speaker, allow him to finish his topic, judge his thoughts, discover his logical breadcrumbs, and then remark on the speech.
8. Increasing the vocabulary:
Hearing a new word can be upsetting and frustrating at times. To avoid a situation like this, one should expand his vocabulary. To expand their vocabulary, the listener should compile a note of unusual words and look them up as quickly as possible in a dictionary. There will be fewer unknown words and frustration as the vocabulary expands.
