Top 6 things I wish someone had told me in the first year of engineering!
College life is the most awaited phase in every student's life. It is the phase where you get a lot of exposure and knowledge about the world's ways. You will make a lot of mistakes and will definitely learn something from them. But here are some of the mistakes that every engineering aspirant should avoid -
1. Start GYMING
Be it, girls or boys, everyone should start gyming right from their first year, especially the engineering students, because 8 -12 hours are spent per day sitting in front of computer or laptop screens that eventually reduce metabolism and drop stamina, accumulate fat, and increases heart risks. Therefore, a little exercise is a must. And who knows, maybe you attract someone special !! xD
2. Use SECOND-HAND BOOKS
In engineering, you will have new subjects every semester, and purchasing a new set of books after every six months is a total waste of money! Instead, try to avail second-hand books at lower costs. You can also sell them when you study at 30% - 40% of their original price.
3. Use ONLINE COURSES
Students who want to pursue their career in coding do not waste their money and time on institutions and centers focused on teaching programming languages. You can get a zillion of online courses on whatever topic you want! Several websites, such as Udemy, Coursera, EDX, Udacity, etc., provide free online courses. The plus point of these online courses is that they provide you with a certificate of completion at the end of the course, which you can showcase in your internships and resumes.
4. 10-FINGER TYPING
This is the basic and most fundamental skill that every programmer should have. It would hardly take 20 - 25 days to increase your typing speed. Mastering this skill will help you decrease the time you would have otherwise spent while writing long codes. It will be highly beneficial.
5. EXPLORE
From the minute you enter your college campus, grab onto anything that comes as an opportunity to you. Do not leave anything that you did not try. Even if you are not good at singing, give it a shot. You have never danced in your life but still appear for the dance auditions. Go for debating, art, public speaking, community projects, and everything you have not tried before. This will never seem a waste of time, rather you will learn something from it, and you will never regret your decision, trust me.
6. BE OPEN
You are going to experience a hoard of students surrounding you in your college. This should never make you feel shy or inferior about yourself. You should talk to everyone and learn a little from every person you meet. Be open! Talking and sharing your ideas with your fellow mates will increase your knowledge and understanding. Moreover, your communication skills will become better, increasing your chances of grabbing that high-paying job in your dream company!
These are some of the points that you should keep in mind during your college days. Since college life comes once in a lifetime, enjoy it to its fullest so that when you look back in time and remember those beautiful memories, you smile, not frown! :-)
