Established in 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was the first to have laid its foundation stone with assistance from UNESCO. In 1961, it was declared as an ‘Institute of National Importance by the Parliament of India. In addition to this, as per the list released by the QS World Rankings 2022, IIT Bombay is the top institute in India, securing its rank at 177. 1.. IIT Bombay: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay, or IIT Mumbai) is a public college. IIT Bombay offers degree and dual degree programs at the undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and doctorate (Ph.D.) levels. The institute offers 17 departments with more than 60 courses in Engineering and Technology, Science, and Management. The applicants are chosen through national-level tests conducted by various authorities, like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, GATE, etc.

IIT Delhi: Established in 1961 as College of Engineering in Delhi, IIT Delhi was later declared an 'Institution of National Importance' and was renamed 'Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.' It was then granted the status of a Deemed University with powers to decide its own academic policy, conduct its own examinations, and award its own degrees. It is a public technical and research university that is counted amongst the oldest IITs of India. IITD was ranked 2 for Engineering and 8 for MBA/ PGDM by NIRF in 2020. Since its inception, over 48,000 students have graduated from IIT Delhi in various streams, including Engineering, Physical Sciences, Management, and Humanities & Social Sciences. Of these, nearly 5,000 students received Ph.D. degrees.
3. IIT Madras: Identified as an ‘Institute of Eminence,' the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras or IITM) was established in 1959 as a public technical and research university. It is the third IIT be set up by the Government of India and is autonomous in nature. Located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the IIT Madras campus is home to India’s first university-based research park- IITMR. IIT Madras was ranked 1 by NIRF in 2020 for the second time in a row. Internationally, IIT Madras was ranked 271 in the QS World University Rankings of 2020. Like its peer IITs, IIT Madras also holds ‘Institute of National Importance’ status and is known across the globe for quality education and experienced faculty.
4. IIT Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is one of the most prestigious institutes established by the Indian government. Founded in 1959, IIT Kanpur provides around 60 courses in five undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. According to NIRF 2019, the institute is ranked 5 in Engineering and 6 in the Overall category, ranked 4 by Employer Reputation. In the QS World University Rankings for 2020, IIT Kanpur was rated 277 globally.
5. IIT Kharagpur: IIT Kharagpur, popularly known as IIT KGP, is the first IIT established in 1951 and recognized as the ‘Institute of National Importance.’ The institute is now entitled to an autonomous University. The institute is well known for its Engineering courses and is always spotted among the top 5 institutes in the NIRF ranking. Internationally, IIT KGP was ranked 281 in the QS World University Rankings 2020.
6. IIT Roorkee: Established in 1847, IIT Roorkee is the seventh IIT recognized as ‘Institution of National Importance.’ All the academic activities of IITR are spread over three campuses- Roorkee, Saharanpur, and Greater Noida. 23 academic departments are offering Engineering, Humanities, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, and Management programs. The institute also holds 4 academic centers, 8 academic service centers, and 3 supporting units.
