1. Design solves a problem, whereas art is a way of expression-
When an artist creates a piece, their feelings and thoughts are expressed. They express it through medium illustrations and paintings. Artists do not solve a problem; they just express. On the other hand, designers take up a problem that people face in day-to-day lives and try to solve them; design helps you combine aesthetics and usability.
2. An artist makes beautiful and meaningful paintings, but a designer designs to practically make people’s lives easier.
Backing up the first point, Artists create beautiful and eye-soothing work, whereas designers work to make people's lives easier. Designers, on the other hand, are called problem solvers. Their major work is studying the user and target audience and creating something that the users could use without any hassle.
3. An artist’s work is open to interpretation, whereas a designer’s work has meaning.
When an artist's work is displayed, people with different thoughts, emotions, standards, age, etc., would interpret different meanings from work. When an artist creates a piece, it’s open for interpretation, whereas when a designer designs something, special care is taken that the piece intends only one meaning so that the user doesn’t get confused.
4. In most cases, an artist can paint whatever comes to mind, but a designer has certain restrictions.
When an artist looks at the canvas to paint something, he can paint anything, literally anything that comes to his mind, it may be abstract to any extent, and it need not have a logic behind it. But as designers design for other people, they have restrictions. While designing something, they need to consider many factors such as the budget, manufacturing process, market needs, user needs, target audience, etc. and come up with a design that suits most of the above-mentioned factors.
5. Art does not have standard rules, but the design does.
In art, an artist does not have to think about the rules or restrictions while creating something. Ther are no official rules or guidelines that an artist needs to follow to create or sell something. In design, although no hard and fast rules, they do have rules of thumb that they need to keep in mind while designing something for the target audience. A lot of these rules depend on the target audience.
People debate over it as a lot of them don't know the difference between both. Also, if you are a student and are planning to apply for any design or art college, this is the most asked question in the interview.
