Cody Wilson, a 24-year-old law student at the University of Texas, did not create the notion of printed, downloadable firearms. He's just developed the first site dedicated to distributing the blueprints online for free to anyone who wants one, wherever in the globe, at any time. Wilson and his crew of amateur gunsmiths, known as Defense Distributed, are also working on what they believe would be the world's first entirely 3-D printed gun, dubbed the "Wiki Weapon."
If it is effective and has a long enough timetable, it has the potential to transform the way we look at weapons – and manufacture them. But coming to terms with this hasn't been simple. After leasing a 3-D printer from Stratasys in late September, the business learned of Wilson's plans and canceled the lease, then promptly deployed a crew to Wilson's residence to take the equipment. "They came right for it," Wilson told Danger Room after the incident. "I hadn't even taken it out of the box yet." " He has been questioned by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms on suspicion of violating federal law."
Wilson has subsequently applied to the ATF for a weapons manufacturing license, which has yet to be accepted, and has gained access to printers from a friendly firm in the Austin region and a range in San Antonio where the group tested its prototype.
That prototype barely survived six rounds, but the possibilities are enormous. What happens to gun control when anybody with a computer can download and print a gun? Wilson and the Wiki Weapon project have also become a test case for how far a group may stretch legal boundaries.
"It's just a matter of time until these three-dimensional printers can manufacture a whole gun," Rep. Steve Israel (D-New York) said in December, calling for the Undetectable Weaponry Act, which outlaws firearms that can trick airport metal detectors, to be renewed.
"The Wiki Weapon project is not the product of a dispassionate technologist wanting to test the outer edges of contemporary technology. Instead, it is a clear, undisguised attempt to transform our system of governance profoundly," writes Josh Horwitz of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.
"How do governments act if they must one day function under the presumption that every and every person has near-immediate access to a handgun through the Internet?" Defense Distributed questions on its website. It might just be a matter of time until we find out.

Kaspersky, a long-time ally of Russia's secret security agencies, provides technical assistance to the FSB, the KGB's successor. His team of researchers educates their agents in digital forensics. When Kaspersky's son was kidnapped, FSB operatives stepped in to save him. Not long after, Kaspersky openly complained that there was "too much freedom" online and advocated for increased government restrictions over social networks, which he blamed in part for his son's kidnapping.
A few months later, Moscow enacted a new law prohibiting some websites and requiring Russian telecom companies to use new monitoring tactics. Western intelligence services are now perplexed by all of this. Did Kaspersky's researchers work alone when they exposed all of the anti-Iran malware? Or did they pull it off with a little help from the Kremlin?
