Facebook has changed its name to Meta Platforms to change the world. The move follows a number of well-known technology companies that have been reported to be involved in Metaverse construction.
Metaverse is a digital reality that combines features of social media, gaming, virtual reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and cryptocurrency that allows users to interact virtually. The name Metaverse was coined by science fiction novelist Neal Stephenson as a metaphor for the real world, the real image of the internet, and the escape from reality. From that perspective, Facebook (Meta) has become one of the companies involved in building Metaverse. Apart from Facebook, there are other companies participating in Metaverse. Here are six well-known companies that have begun focusing on the Metaverse program:
1. Facebook (Meta)
By changing the Facebook name to Meta, they are ready to become Metaverse developers. Facebook has also unveiled its first version, Horizon World. Facebook is now developing various technologies that can support Metaverse such as VR Messaging, Project Cambria, and Horizon Marketplace.
2. Google
Google will launch Metaverse by building a Google Glass product. In 2021, Google upgraded VR and AR devices with the Starline project.
3. Tencent
Tencent has platforms WeChat and Tencent QQ that will support Metaverse development. Tencent QQ has e-commerce, movies, music, voice chat and play while WeChat has a mobile payment system.
4. Epic Games
Epic Games is one of the game companies preparing to build Metaverse. Epic Games has publicly announced that it will fund $ 1 billion to build Metaverse.
5. Microsoft
Microsoft launched its Metaverse initiative by introducing a Mesh for Teams that can be used for presentations, meetings and discussion of avatars without personal contact. Even one Epic Games game hosted the Metaverse team, which is Fortnite, now with 350 million registered players. Epic Games develops VR, AR and 3D content for easy access.
6. Binance
Binance is a company that can support financial transactions on Metaverse as the Binance NFT Marketplace which is useful for trading NFT assets from various blockchains.
Metaverse is currently considered a new revolution in social media. But that doesn't mean it's new. Long before the invention of technology as it is today, the concept of the Metaverse was first mentioned in a science fiction novel entitled Snow Crash. A few years after the book was released in the international market, a drama called Active Worlds was created because it was inspired by the writings of Neal Stephenson's thoughts. In addition, there was the Second Life game which was popular in the early 2000s because it allowed players to interact with other players through animated avatars. if the Metaverse is really applied to one's life in the future, then it will change the way one communicates with other people.
