Venomous snakes are  capable of producing venom, which they use for killing prey, for defense, and to assist with digestion of their prey.

There are four types of snake venom,

1) proteolytic venom,2) h e m o toxic venom,3) neurotoxic venom, and 4) cytotoxic venom.

One reason that snakes are so dangerous is that many species have venom that often kill in a matter of minutes.

Venomous snakes kill their victims with toxic substances produced in a modified salivary gland that the animal then injects into prey using their fangs.

Such venom has evolved over millions of years to cause severe reactions in the victim, from immobilization and hemorrhage to tissue death and inflammation, researchers reported in 2019 in the journal Frontiers of Ecology and Evolution.

Here are 5 snakes whose venom not only packs a punch for small prey but that can take out humans.

1) Inland tai pan

The inland tai pan, also commonly known as the western tai pan, the small-scaled snake or the fierce snake, is a specie of extremely venomous snake in the family E l a p i d e.

The venom of the Inland Tai pan is extremely potent and is rated as the most toxic of all snake venom s in LD50 tests on mice.

As well as being strongly n e u r o t o x i c the venom contains a 'spreading factor' (h y l u r o n i d s e  enzyme) that increases the rate of absorption.

The inland tai pan's venom consists of: Neurotoxins: Presynaptic neurotoxins;    p r a d o x i n (PDX), and post synaptic neurotoxins; O x y l e p i t o x i n-1, alpha o x y toxin 1, alpha s c u toxin 1.

It has the most toxic venom of any land snake in the world Yet.

Severe symptoms can begin in 30 minutes or less.

Medical scientists have concluded that  death can occur in as few as 30-45 minutes.

 Inland Tai pan at #1. One 100 mg dose of Inland Tai pan venom is enough to kill 100 adult humans.

2) Eastern Brown Snake

The eastern brown snake, often referred to as the common brown snake, is a species of highly venomous snake in the family E l a p i d e.

The species is native to eastern and central Australia and southern New Guinea. It was first described by André Marie Constant Duméril, Gabriel Bibron, and A u g u s t e Duméril in 1854.

The venom of Eastern brown snake consists mostly of neurotoxins.

Neurotoxins are toxic substances that are destructive to nerve tissue and can result in central nervous system damage, epilepsy, and memory impairments.

In contrast, an untreated eastern brown snake bite can kill in under half an hour.

3) Coastal Tai pan

The coastal tai pan is a species of highly venomous snake in the family E l a p i d  e.

Described by Wilhelm Peters in 1867, the species is native to the coastal regions of northern and eastern Australia and the island of New Guinea.

According to most toxicological studies, this species is the third-most venomous s n a k e after inland tai pan and eastern brown snake.

Its venom is predominantly neurotoxic.

It injects an average of 120 mg per bite, with as much as 400 mg being recorded. This is plenty of venom to kill a person, which is how the coastal tai pan can kill up to 56 humans in a single bite.

Additionally, the potency of this bite means that symptoms and signs of distress occur within as few as 15 to 30 minutes.

4)  Forest Cobra

The forest cobra, also commonly called the black cobra and the black and white-lipped cobra, is a species of venomous snake.

The species is native to Africa, mostly the central and western parts of the continent. It is the largest true cobra specie with a record length of 3.2 meter.

The forest cobra has an average venom yield of 570 mg, and can bite with as much as 1100 mg per bite.

This is a significant amount, especially when you consider the fact that the black mamba bites with a maximum of 400 mg of venom in a single bite.

This is the primary reason why the forest cobra is so deadly. No animal on earth needs that much venom in a single bite.

5) Dubois’s Sea Snake

 Dubois' sea or reef shallows sea snake, is a species of venomous "sea snake".

Its geographic range includes Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and the northern, eastern and western coastal areas of Australia, that is the Coral Sea, Timor Sea and Indian Ocean.

An adult Dubois’ sea snake may range in size from 2 to 5 feet.

The fangs are 1.8 mm long, which are relatively short for a snake, and the venom yield is 0.43 mg.

The signs and symptoms of Dubois’ Sea Snake Bite may be apparent within a few hours following the bite.
