Top 5 tried and tested ways to get juicy, plump lips

Like clear skin, shiny hair and wide hips, full lips are a universal symbol of beauty and youth. Undoubtedly, they look great, but they also add a mysterious and sensual charm to one. How many times have we gazed admiringly at pictures of celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Karina Kapoor, Lisa Haydn and Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley and secretly longed for their perfectly sculpted pout? While some are born with it, many, like Kylie Jenner, go under the knife to achieve plump, kissable lips. But those born without a plump pair of wrinkles need not despair; there are plenty of other ways to replicate a luscious pout without visiting a beautician's office.

Before you start, take a good look at your lips to see if they need scrubbing. Apply a layer of your favorite lip balm and use a clean cloth to remove dry skin.

1. Cinnamon oil method

The cinnamon oil method is a cheap and easy way to get naturally plump lips. The skin on our lips is thinner and more delicate than on the rest of our body. So when a small amount of oil is rubbed on the lips, it irritates the top layer, resulting in mild and harmless inflammation. This causes blood to rush towards the lips, causing temporary swelling and redness. But don't apply the oil directly on your lips. Apply a small amount of lip balm or petroleum jelly before applying to your lips. Repeat if necessary. Cinnamon also freshens your breath.

2. Clove oil method

Like cinnamon oil, clove oil is known for its slightly irritating properties. So use it sparingly. The way to use clove oil is the same as for cinnamon oil: take a small amount of lip balm, mix one drop into it and apply it to your lips. Alternatively, you can take a teaspoon of honey, add one drop of clove oil and apply it on your lips. Leave on for a minute until the stinging sensation goes away. Rinse with water and finish with your favorite lip balm.

3. The toothbrush method

For this method, you will need your trusty toothbrush. Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to your lips and hold your face against the steam source. Once the skin on your lips is softened, scrub them with a toothbrush. This method works because the dead skin is sloughed off, and your lips end up looking plumper with a pinkish tint. Finish with your favorite lip balm.

4. Sugar method

Apply a layer of your favorite lip balm. Wait 10 minutes. Next, take a teaspoon of sugar and crush it lightly with a pestle. The sugar should be granular in parts. Mix sugar with a teaspoon of butter or coconut oil and rub on your lips. This will help slough off dead skin and reveal the plump, pink skin underneath. Rubbing causes blood to reach the lips, giving them a reddened, plump appearance.

5. Makeup method

If none of these methods seem to appeal to you, try a less tedious method of applying makeup. By applying a highlighter or shimmery lip gloss to the center of the lips, you can create the illusion of fullness. Those with thin lips should stay miles away from dark shades like oxblood, brown and purple. Stick to lighter and shimmery shades to give your lips a fuller look.

Points to remember

Staying hydrated is important for healthy and full lips. So drink as much as you can.

Because clove and cinnamon oil methods use natural and everyday ingredients, they are considered safe. But before you try it, do a little patch test and check if you have any allergies.

Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

In case you have overdone it with the oils, rinse them off immediately and apply ice to your lips.
