1. Dark Matter - Spider Web
 

  Planets, stars, asteroids, galaxies - the things we can actually see - make up less than 5% of the total universe.  Scientists think another ~25% is a strange substance called dark matter: we can't see it, we don't understand it, but we're pretty sure it's there because everything tunes its own gravity runs.

 

  Scientists believe that dark matter acts like a cobweb, holding fast-moving galaxies together.  And much in that, it twists the appearance of space so that when astronomers observe distant galaxies, they often appear distorted.

 

  We have plenty of evidence that dark matter exists, but what remains a mystery.  Some think that dark matter is made up of an unseen particle or particles; others believe it is an undiscovered property of gravity.  Whatever the truth, dark matter is a real puzzle, and it has proven extremely difficult to count.

 

2. Dark Energy - The Poltergeist
 

  So if dark matter makes up 25% of the universe and normal matter makes up 5%, what about the other 70%?

 

  We tend to think that the rest is simply 'dark energy,' powerful enough to tear the entire universe apart.  While dark matter seems to be holding galaxies together, dark energy seems to want to tear everything apart.

 

  We all know that the universe is expanding, but it's expanding faster than it should, and scientists think dark energy is the culprit.

 

  But where is dark energy coming from?  Some believe it originated from collisions between quantum particles, but no one knows for sure.

 

 

3. Quantum Entanglement - Spooky Action
 

  Famously termed 'spooky action at a distance by a skeptic Albert Einstein, quantum entanglement is the phenomenon by which two particles in completely different parts of the universe can be intertwined, depending on the behavior of their companions and the  Indicates the situation.

4. Antimatter - The Evil Twins
 

  Imagine yourself in the opposite land.  Black is white; the top is down, and... is matter-antimatter?

 

  It sounds strange, but the subatomic particles that make up everything around us – electrons, protons, and neutrons – all have evil twins.  Antimatter particles have the same mass as normal particles but the opposite electric charge.

 

  And because of this, antimatter annihilates normal matter upon contact.  Poof!  Both are destroyed in an instant.  So antimatter has the potential to destroy us and everything we like.  But don't be afraid!  There is very little antimatter moving around in the universe.

 

  What's more, antimatter could also prove useful.  When antimatter and matter collide and annihilate each other, it releases energy.  In PET scanners, anti-electrons are created, and their destruction in the body allows doctors to produce sophisticated images.  In addition, scientists hope to use the energy released by antimatter/matter interactions to power spacecraft one day.  So maybe antimatter isn't so bad.

 

 

5. Fermi Paradox - Little Green Men
 

  The universe is vast;  Like, vast.  In the grand scheme of things, humans are just tiny fry.  And yet, we seem to be the only ones at the party at present.

 

  The Fermi paradox refers to the contradiction between the high possibility of extraterrestrial life and the apparent lack of evidence that such life exists.

 

  We have now identified some potentially habitable 'Earth-like planets, but we are yet to see any signs of intelligent life from 'outside.'  So why the radio silence?  There are many theories, ranging from the possibility that intelligent life is exceptionally rare or short-lived to the notion that alien species purposefully evade detection.
