Career planning is the most critical decision of your life. Career planning is the self-evaluation and planning process done by a person to have a strong career path aligned with one's career goals, aspirations, and skills.
Your career should be based on your interests, qualities, and education. As Confucius quotes, " Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work for a day in your life."
Good career planning helps a person grow in life professionally, which also helps them grow personally.
If you don't plan your career, it will be based on decisions and evaluations done by others. It may lead to a job profile that was not at all part of your aspirations and career goals.
Five essential steps of career planning are:-
1. Self-Assessment
The first step is to assess yourself to know your interests, skills, education, talents, and personality. This will decide the type of career you would like to be a part of.
You should know your talents and skills so that you would be great at your job. You should select a career path that suits your personality. Once you are done with your self-assessment, it will be easier to plan your career goal.
2. Explore Work/ Career options
After assessing yourself and knowing your talents and skills, you should search for different jobs that require your skills, talents and that are interesting for you. You can take the help of the internet or teachers for selecting other jobs. This list would include several jobs because there would be many jobs that you will find exciting and which will suit your personality.
3. Narrow down the list of Work/ Career options
Now, take the list, including several jobs that you found based on your interests, talents, and education. Shortlist any three best jobs from the list. These jobs must be most close to your self-assessment. This would not be easy to select any three from the vast inventory, but remember your assessment of yourself, and you will pick the jobs.
4. Decide or Choose the best option
Select the best from the list of three jobs that you selected base on your interests. Consider all the facts of your self-assessment for deciding the best option. You should choose a job that you will enjoy while doing it. Remember what Katherine Whitehorn said," Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it."
Prepare for your career goal.
After finding the best option, start preparing for it. Just remember that after a long process, you have decided what to be, so you must achieve it. Plan your strategies wisely to achieve your goal. If you work hard for it, you will achieve it anyhow.
Now, I would like to give an example of Career Planning. Suppose there is a girl A. She has studied computer science. Now she is planning for her career.
Firstly, she assessed herself and found she is investigative, social, and realistic. She has searched for jobs based on her education and skills. The positions include Mathematician, Cyber security, Optometrist, Researchers, Analysts, Web developers, Psychologists, etc. She has selected Cyber security, Web developers, and Psychologists from the list. She decided the best from it that suits her, and that is Web developers. This is how she selected her career goal, and now she will prepare for it to achieve it. These are the steps to find your career goal and achieve it.
