The words Indian and Food can bring to your mind an aromatic image of soft, puffy, non, juicy, buttery chicken dishes, luscious kebab platters, and spicy mixed vegetable curries with creamy lentils soup. But that is not the case in Indian food. The aforementioned dishes are part of a vast ocean of Indian cuisine and are the northernmost of the country. South Indian cuisine is definitely polar with amazing flavors and hearty tastes.

South India mainly consists of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, each with its own version of commonly known South Indian dishes and regional specialties. 

 

 

1. Masala Dosa/

South Indian rice flour crepes It is a traditional South Indian breakfast. Still, it is eaten at lunchtime at other times and is available in its own variety across the country. These waffle crepes can vary according to the type of filling and the crunchy level of crepes. They are usually flavored with hot and sour lentil soup known as sambar and creamy coconut chutney with mint or curry leaves. Top variants of dosa include - masala, plain and Rava, or paper dosa. Simple is hollow without filling Spicy dosa filling or served with mashed potatoes with onions and tomatoes. The Rava variant is made from semolina and gives extra crunch to the dish. Nowadays, other variants of masala dosa are also available, cottage cheese, vegetables, and others. This is India's favorite breakfast.

 

 

2. Idlis/

It is a popular breakfast dish, served with hot and sour lentil soup with sambar and coconut chutney vegetables. If you try comfort food with mild tastes and soft and fluffy textures, the fiery flavor is idyllic.

 

 

3. Vada/

The look of these may taste good to you, but these are not delicious! However, they can satisfy you for deep-fried, hot, and crispy munchies and breakfast! Another eatery in South India, these vadas look almost like donuts but are not as sweet. They are made with black lentil blends and seasoned gently with peppercorn, curry leaves, cumin, chili, and sometimes with mild hints of onion. They are crunchy breakfast fritters flavored with coconut chutney.

 

 

4. Uttapam /

Serves pizza pancakes Uttapam is not easy to compare with pizza or pancake. But it is a harmonious hybrid of the two with its own unique identity. It is cooked like a pancake, and a ladle mixture of fermented rice and lentils is poured over the hot grid. They are then sprinkled with chopped tomatoes, onions, peppers, coconut, carrots, or other choice toppings. This leads to a porous and fluffy delicious dish called uttapam, which is almost like dosa but soft and usually served with or without chutneys or other soups.

 

 

5. Appam/

Appams are a pancake of South India, similar to crepes like dosa, made with fermented rice flour and coconut milk. They are soft, light, and fluffy and are best eaten with a generous serving of Istu or Ashton. The estu is freshly made coconut milk with fresh vegetables such as aloes and chilies, a little spicy with grilled meats of your choice. The most common options are chicken, mutton, or vegetable istube.
