How do you react when your plans fail? Do you roll with your fists? Or does worrying prevent you from enjoying life? Stress can be defined as any change that causes physical, emotional, or psychological distress. Depression is your body's response to anything that needs attention or action. Everyone experiences some form of stress. The way you respond to stress, however, makes a huge difference to your overall well-being.
To a great extent, our personality determines how we deal with stress in our lives, but here are 5 things to help keep your stress under control:
1. Get more sleep; It is widespread in our society to have less than six hours of sleep each night. But experts continue to tell us that we need at least eight hours. Not just to relax our bodies, but to rejuvenate our minds. “Tired” and “cranky” seem to go hand in hand. Do not use your bedroom to watch the news or to complete some office work. Make that room your place to rest, a place to relax and escape the day. Have a cup of hot tea, take a warm bath, or read a piece of paper that will help you relax.
2. Have faith; Praying briefly in times of distress can give you a sense of security, especially when the situation is not hopeless. Studies have shown that people who rely on high energy have lower blood pressure. Being able to forgive people can also affect your blood pressure. Harboring resentment is not good for your health!
3. Turn off; The simplicity of cell phones in our lives can actually be a two-edged sword. We rely so much on them it seems we can't live without them. This increased access does not mean that our loved ones can reach us at any time, but it can also work. If your employer has to have your cell phone number, be sure to set clear limits on when and where you can be reached. Your leisure time is yours.
4. Take a vacation; It does not have to be an attractive lounge. A day at the beach or in the afternoon in the park will do. Wherever you may be and do not think about debt, work, or any other conflict you may have, it’s important to take your time, so do it! You will feel better with a new perspective.
5. Treat yourself; Register for a yoga class at your local gym or community center. Cost means nothing, and you will feel more comfortable after just one session. A monthly massage or spa treatment is also a great way to rejuvenate. You will come out feeling like a dollar jelly bowl.
Sometimes, the best way to handle your stress is to change your mood. Sometimes, the best strategy is to change the way you respond to this situation.
Building a clear understanding of how stress affects your physical and mental health is important. It is also important to see how your mental and physical health affects your level of stress.
Depression is inevitable. But what we do about it is up to us. Experiment with these suggestions and see what works for you!
