They have mainly tried to humanize the prisoners. Sometimes people end up in jail because of a crime committed by their dear ones and eventually them taking up the responsibility of the crime.

The way the series depicts the different races, gender, families, body types, sexuality, etc., is commendable. How even though they are locked up in jail, they are just like a family together.
