Season 1
The first season begins on November 6, 1983, in a small town called Hawkins. Researchers at Hawkins National Laboratory open a rift to the "Upside Down," an alternate dimension that reflects the real world. A monstrous humanoid creature (later nicknamed the Demogorgon) escapes and abducts a boy named Will Byers and a teenage girl named Barbara Holland. Will's mother, Joyce, and the town's police chief, Jim Hopper, search for Will. At the same time, a young psychokinetic girl who goes by the name "Eleven" escapes from the laboratory and assists Will's friends, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair, in their own efforts to find Will
Season 2
In fall 1984, one year after his disappearance, Will Byers finds himself the target of the Upside Down as a large tentacled entity called the Mind soon terrorizes the citizens of Hawkins once again and possesses him, drawing back Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper along with Will's friends Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, Mike's sister Nancy, Will's brother Jonathan, and Nancy's boyfriend Steve Harrington. The whole group, along with Californian newcomer Max Mayfield and a missing Eleven, must join forces once again to prevent the threat from increasing
Season 3
In the summer of 1985, in Hawkins, the newly opened Mall has become the center of attention in town, causing other stores to close their business due to its popularity. Jim Hopper disapproves of Mike Wheeler's relationship with his daughter, Eleven. Still recovering from Bob death, Joyce Byers considers moving out of Hawkins with her children. However, magnetic disruptions lead her to believe that the Upside Down has returned, so she enlists Hopper's help in uncovering the truth. Will Byers begins experiencing premonitions from the Upside Down, despite Eleven's closing of the original gate that led to his disappearance. He believes the Mind is still alive and back in Hawkins. Meanwhile, Max Mayfield's stepbrother Billy Hargrove is taken over by the Mind, forced to possess other citizens of Hawkins to fulfill the Mind. Eleven and her friends have no choice but to battle Billy, the other possessed victims, and destroy the Mind in its new and terrifying form, once and for all

The first takes place in Hawkins, where a series of mysterious teenage murders begin haunting the town. Eddie, the leader of the Hellfire Club, Hawkins High School Dungeons & Dragons group, becomes suspect in the murders after senior cheerleading captain Chrissy Cunningham dies in his trailer. Dustin Henderson, Lucas and Erica Sinclair, Max Mayfield, Steve Harrington, Nancy Wheeler, and Robin Buckley begin investigating to clear Eddie's name. They discover that the true perpetrator is a powerful being who resides in the Upside Down, whom they later dub
The second involves Mike Wheeler visiting Eleven, Will and Jonathan Byers at their new home in California. Due to the events in Hawkins and the imminent danger to her friends, Eleven goes with Dr. Sam Owens to a secret facility in Nevada to regain her powers, where she is reunited with Dr. Martin Brenner and forced to confront her time in Hawkins National Laboratory. With the military searching for Eleven, Mike, Will, Jonathan, and new friend Argyle try to track her down first.
The third follows Joyce Byers and Murray as they venture to Russia upon learning that Jim Hopper may still be alive. Meanwhile, Hopper is held in a Soviet prison camp in Kamchatka, where he and the other inmates are forced to battle a Demogorgon that the Russians have captured.
