The African American slavery in America’s civil war had taken away too many slaves and made the country ungovernable, making it nearly impossible to secure freedom in a land of white supremacy. One slave named Calpurnia learns that she was sold, and she decides to seek revenge against her master, a man who betrayed her and took everything she held dear to herself. Now in her 60s, she goes into hiding from her tormentors, but she still finds ways to threaten others and work around them to accomplish her goals. That all changes when she sees her son, Samuel, who was captured by white supremacists, get whipped for refusing to join him in his rebellion against segregation. As revenge becomes a necessity, Sam asks his mother to allow him to leave, and despite a brutal rape when he tries it, he returns and fights off his captors. Because of that, she decides to take matters into her own hands and smuggles his body back across the border with help from smugglers, escaping slavery, but the curse is real when he dies because of his actions. It’s a hard concept to wrap your head around, but that’s exactly why it has earned The Hateful Eight (2014), a massive cult following that spans over 150 million subscribers alone. 8. 'Finding Santa Claus' – 2005 This film follows the life of Father Christmas, whose job is to spread joy during Christmastime to everyone that He comes across. While Father Christmas travels throughout Europe, meeting different people every so often, he encounters various challenges, some of which are supernatural. When he goes missing, Father Christmas has no explanation, but later discovers that something bad happened– and the spirit of Christmas himself is out in the night sky, taking his place. Finding Santa Claus is the fourth part of this unique story about a boy’s search for his beloved father. She’s taken from planet Earth to a mysterious parallel universe, where she meets the other half of her new family– Shattered, played by Jessica Biel, and Tasha Yar, who happens to be the leader of Darkseekers, a secretive faction that was formed to rebel against the regime’s ruling. There, she reunites her long lost brother, Krawkor, portrayed by Brad Pitt’s Rocky Geller, and faces the same fate as her father, Dr. Gideon, who disappeared 30 years earlier and had been revived as the founder of the infamous Black Panthers– an organization responsible for a bloody revolution. But like most of Escape Plans, Escape Planets works, albeit slowly when the plot gets too convoluted. Overall, the storyline is engaging, with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very end. Plus, you know you won't be disappointed by the ending. Unlike so many sequels and spinoffs, however, Escape Planets manages to hold onto this formula and does it well. Hopefully, the next movie in this list will focus on similar ideas to this one and bring us all closer to our next big adventure.
