Not only do we like to use laptops for lots of other things – such as watching movies on the train or browsing the web when we're waiting for a friend – but we also love to tinker and tinker they must be fairly sturdy.
So if you are going to choose one for yourself, make sure you take the above into consideration.
Admittedly we'll be quite excited about these products and the rest of what makes up the list below. And we can think of many more that we'd like to see – but on the whole, this is what we want to see from laptops in 2021.
Slate 3D-accelerated touchscreen 2-in-1
The Nexus 7 (2012) might have put Google's Nexus brand on the map but it was really n more than a glorified sliver of a tablet with a shamefully poor screen.
So it's exciting to see that two years on, and Google is bringing the Nexus range to the mainstream. The new Nexus 5X is great value and a nice bit of kit for those looking for a decent Nexus device. But we're also really excited to see what Google has planned for the new Nexus 7.
The current Nexus 7 (2012) was a shamefully small bit of kit, but one thing that made it more palatable was the huge, 10.1-inch 3D-capable touchscreen. It wasn't the most powerful tablet on the planet and the screen wasn't particularly crisp but it was still a great little machine.
But if Google goes down this route it can bring us a tablet that has many of the same features as the HTC Nexus 9, but is thinner and lighter, and with more battery life and better 3D capabilities.
There are also so many innovations in the 3D graphics space. Google has made the leap to Intel's Core M architecture in the Nexus 9 – something which we'll hopeo1y see in its successor too – so it's looking as though the industry is quickly changing from 2D to 3D. This is a bit of a hot topic at the moment and one that is unlikely to die down any time soon.
A 12-inch touchscreen laptop
Something that we've been wanting to see for some time now is a 12-inch laptop. We've been used to the MacBook Air and Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga with its 13-inch screen that so neatly fit into the chassis, so it's great to see a huge, touch-sensitive laptop that takes the size of a MacBook Air and turns it into a 13-inch touch-screen laptop.
It's just an idea at the moment but we're really excited to see how this could work in practice. Obviously, the MacBook Air is a laptop built for portability but what if it was physically possible to build a 12-inch laptop?
Then you could take it anywhere with you and use it as you would any standard laptop, but with a whole lot more screen space.
Google wants to be the number one search engine so it's likely to be pushing.
Google Assistant comes to the UK
A lot has been said about the release of Google Assistant for iOS and Android, which has seen the big G embrace voice control and try to make it the main way you interact with a range of devices.
But it hasn't been that simple. The Assistant team decided to build it as a whole separate software system for Windows, Linux, and Mac, which was challenging for many reasons, and not really user-friendly at the moment.
But it looks like that is changing. In an interview with Wired, Google's director of product management, John Giannandrea, said: "With what we're doing with Assistant on other platforms, there are a couple of improvements we want to do to make it easier to
