Top 5 Ingredients for Anti-Aging

There are several things to slow down the aging process or, at the very least, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and pores.

"We use the cosmeceuticals term to describe compounds in skincare products that have many pharmacologic effects," says dermatologist Anna Axelson, M.D., at Henry Ford Health System. Unfortunately, there are thousands of products in stores promising to make us seem younger than we are, picking a product to buy can be difficult.

Best ingredients to look for on product labels for antiaging:

  1. Ceramides

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of our skin. "Ceramides are lipids that keep this skin barrier healthy by sealing moisture into the skin. When it comes to anti-aging, the more moisturized the skin is, the younger it appears. Ceramides are a wonderful element to look for prone to eczema skin, according to Linkner, because they help keep irritants out. Ceramides are a beneficial component for any skin type because they have virtually no disadvantages.

2. Glycolic Acid

This acid, which belongs to the alpha-hydroxy acid family, is unique in that it has the smallest size of its molecule, allowing it to penetrate the skin deeply. Glycolic acid has the same exfoliating properties as any other AHA, breaking the bonds that hold dead skin cells and enhancing skin tone, texture, and pore size. "It raises both elastin and collagen levels in the skin, so it can help to reduce wrinkles, too. People with sensitive skin may be irritated by glycolic acid. So use it gradually to allow your skin to adjust.

3. Hyaluronic Acid

In the world of hydrating ingredients, this is a popular favorite. Because it can store water more than a thousand times its weight in water, it can not only hydrate the skin but also fill in fine wrinkles and plump up our skin. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar occurring in our bodies that we create on our own until we reach the age of 20. Therefore it's rather harmless and unlikely to cause any problems to the skin. Apply hyaluronic acid to mildly damp skin or use it with another moisturizer for the best results.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals that damage skin caused by environmental factors like pollution and the sun. Still, it also helps to reduce spots and discoloration by interfering with the development of extra pigment in the skin. As if that weren't enough, it also aids in the creation of collagen. Some people are sensitive to vitamin C, and they may feel irritation. Vitamin C can also be turned inactive when exposed to air and sunlight. Look for vitamin C supplements in opaque, dark bottles and store them somewhere dark and cool such as a drawer.

5. Retinol

Vitamin A is used to make retinol, which is a form of retinoid. The little chemicals that make up retinol travel deep under the epidermis (outside layer of skin) to the dermis. Retinol boosts the formation of elastin and collagen by neutralizing free radicals. This gives the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and enlarged pores a “plumping” impression. Retinol also has an exfoliating action on the skin's surface, which can help enhance tone and texture even further. Retinol can also help to treat scarring and severe acne. It helps keep pores unclogged by creating comedolytic agents, which help prevent the formation of blemishes or comedone. Retinol can also be used to treat severe acne and scarring. It creates comedolytic agents to keep your pores unclogged and prevent the growth of comedones or blemishes.
