There are several metrics that determine which countries are the happiest in the world. These include high life expectancy, access to quality healthcare, freedom, social connections, financial stability and more.
The World Happiness Report used a wide range of data, including the Gallup World Poll, to determine which countries are the happiest, or what the report calls the "average national life rating." Here are the happiest countries in the world according to the World Happiness Report.
1. Finland
Finland tops the list of happy countries despite long, cold and dark winters. With a score of 7,889. Finland is a Northern European country bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia. Its capital, Helsinki, occupies a peninsula and surrounding islands in the Baltic Sea. Helsinki is home to the 18th-century SU omen Lina sea fortress, the fashionable Design District and various museums. The Northern Lights can be seen from the arctic province of Lapland, a vast wilderness with national parks and ski resorts. Finland is a shining example to the rest of the world of what a happy country looks like. It scored on social support, freedom, high life expectancy, and perceptions of corruption and dystopia. Finnish residents have access to water, wilderness, national parks, reindeer, and of course the Northern Lights.
2. Iceland
Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape of volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. The massive glaciers are protected in Vat Na JO KUL and Snæfellsjökull National Parks. Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavík, which runs on geothermal energy and is home to the National and Saga Museums, tracing Iceland's Viking history. ― Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is full of beautiful landscapes full of hot springs, geysers, coastal waterfalls and volcanoes. It's a popular tourist destination, but it's clearly a fantastic place to live, having been ranked as the second-happiest country in the world.
3. Denmark
Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. It is connected to nearby Sweden by the Öresund Bridge. 4. Switzerland
Switzerland broke the winning streak of the Scandinavian countries and took the fourth place in the world's happiest countries. Located between Italy, Austria, Germany and France, it is home to beautiful alpine villages, ski resorts, stunning lakes, hiking trails and a world-renowned chocolate and watchmaking industry. Switzerland boasts a high GDP, which gives its residents strong financial security.
5. Holland
This northwestern coastal European country is popular with tourists. Amsterdam, its capital, is home to bike-friendly streets lined with canals, museums and legal marijuana sold in cafés. The beautiful nature that the Netherlands has to offer helps it to round out the top five happiest countries in the world.
