It's typically easy to determine why a controversy occurred, or maybe suggest what everyone else should do to resolve the matter. But when it's our responsibility to deal with the problem, that's when things get complicated. We regularly see unlimited options and analyze the implications of every choice. However, we are able to overcome the fear of the unknown and hone in on the most effective available option. We will get creative. And therefore, the excellent news is that if being creative isn’t innate for you, there are specific action steps to picking a path forward.

Everyone knows the concept of thinking outside the box, but at the identical token, we all have boundaries to control within. We can’t use an endless supply of resources or completely change the foundations of business. In other words, sometimes we want to be ready to solve problems within the box, staying grounded, actually

Come up with ideas

This can be the brainstorming step, where we get to throw out a bunch of half-baked ideas to work out what has legs. The more ideas, the higher at now of the method. This isn’t the crisis where we evaluate the choices. Rather than trying to work out which options are best, we would like volume.

I accustomed to teach an audio engineering course on MIDI technology, but the tech also spilled over to other areas. I had an exercise where students would think about alternative ways to utilize it, but they couldn’t have it relate to music or audio production. All of them thought it absolutely was strange initially, but by giving them a framework for the matter, they were able to come up with some interesting ideas.

The goal is to get multiple answers. Some came up with the thought to use the technology to manage lights during a home. Some said they may use it to coach their dog to try and do tricks by playing dog-whistle sounds. This exercise underscored how developing numerous creative ideas helps sharpen our ability to resolve any problem.

  Narrow ideas down

At this step, we wish to shed ideas that need incredible resources or simply seem too far-fetched. Seeing obvious holes in an inspiration implies that an excessive amount of work would, should come in the answer to form it effective.

We aren’t looking to eliminate all options. We aren’t even disregarding all bad options. The key's too narrow them down, not find the right option. We wish those that appear to possess the most effective odds of solving the matter with minimal consequences for the business. Once you've got a brief list of ideas that would work, you're able to travel to the following step.

  List the pros and cons

Every solution will have positives and negatives. There's no perfect option. By listing the varied pros and cons, we are able to get a clearer picture of every, and see how it impacts other areas of the business, masking it easier to spot the incidentals and offshoots from deploying each strategy. From there, consider the full system. How would this impact other areas? What ripple could this potentially create?

Make a choice from a bunch of bad options

I’ve used these five steps repeatedly in my career. By this step, I've often still been left with several options. But after evaluating every one, clear and dear ramifications would emerge. Maybe it required reducing our margins to induce the merchandise sold. Maybe it had been ramping up production or delaying other initiatives, or maybe mean reducing staff or investing in new technology.

This is often where the good leaders separate themselves from the common leaders. This is often where the tough decisions are made. But this is often also where you get to manage your fate. Rather than trying to find an ideal choice, choose from a bunch of bad options. All options will seem flawed at this stage. If an ideal option existed, you'd have uncovered it earlier within the process and gone forward with implementing it. Move forward to try to do  everything possible to maximize the pros and limit the destruction from the cons.

By following these five steps, your ability to come back up with creative business solutions will expand. When an issue emerges, you'll immediately define the box you're operating within and begin thinking of options and be ready to identify pros and cons to guide you towards the simplest option, whether it's flawed. The more I take advantage of this process, the better it's and also the more valuable it becomes, helping to avoid analysis paralysis or short-sighted decisions that backfires, so hopefully you'll keep them front of mind.
