Having too much visceral fat can lead to several health problems due to its position in the body. If you have a lot of visceral fat (also called belly fat or belly fat), a type of fat that surrounds your internal organs, it can increase your risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
If you want to lose belly fat, it can be hard to know where to start. “While you can't reduce visceral fat, you can improve your overall health and reduce it through dietary changes, including eating more fiber and protein and drinking enough water to stay hydrated.
One way to make these dietary changes is during the first meal of the day. "Eating a balanced breakfast helps with weight loss in general because it speeds up your metabolism, but if you want to lose belly fat specifically, you need to eat better throughout the day, not just at breakfast," says Coleman.
To help you healthily start your day, check out this list of the best breakfast foods to help reduce belly fat, and for more healthy eating tips, check out The Worst Eating Habits for Belly Fat.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal has been related to a variety of health advantages, including blood sugar stabilization, cholesterol reduction, reduced risk of chronic disease, and weight management.
The majority of oatmeal's health advantages are due to its high soluble fiber content, which is an important component for weight loss. In fact, according to a study published in the American Journal of Nutrition, dietary fiber consumption is connected to a reduction in belly fat.
Nuts such as almonds and other nuts
Almonds and other nuts, according to Coleman, can aid in the reduction of abdominal fat. "Nuts are a great source of plant-based protein and healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids," Coleman explains, "and omega-3s can help balance blood sugar and insulin, which is crucial for reducing belly fat." If almonds aren't your thing, walnuts are another omega-3-rich nut.
Fruit
Fruit is an excellent fruit to include in your breakfast to help you lose belly fat because it can help you control sugar cravings throughout the day and keep you fuller for longer due to its fiber content.
Strawberries and blueberries, for example, contain flavonoids, which have been shown to aid weight loss. "Including fruits in your breakfast, such as papaya, pomegranate, green apple, kiwi, and oranges, helps cut cholesterol levels and reduce risk factors for heart disease and stroke," Coleman says.
If feasible, round out your breakfast with some protein and healthy fats in addition to your fruit. You may either cook a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and your favorite nut butter or make an omelet with a cup of fruit on the side.
Fermented foods
Many people dismiss the concept of eating fermented foods for breakfast, yet evidence suggests that fermentation can help you lose belly fat.
"Fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kefir, or kimchi, are full of good bacteria that promote gut health," says Allison Tallman, MS, RDN, CNSC, a registered dietitian at Sporting Smiles, "and studies show that consumption of fermented foods can reduce visceral fat, particularly in the abdominal region." Start with a bowl of yogurt topped with fruit, nuts, and seeds for the ultimate fermented breakfast.
Salmon
You can also start your day with salmon, which is a great source of healthful fats.
"Salmon is a sort of good fat that may help to reduce visceral fat since it contains omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and iron, all of which have been linked to lower visceral fat content," Tallman explains.
