These methods present epistemological difficulties. Cells present conventional philosophical questions about the status of unobservable and the veracity of evidence because they are primarily microscopic. Cell biologists must not only observe but also physically alter cells and the structures that make them up in order to provide accurate models of the relationships between functions (such biochemical reactions) and cell architecture. Thus, their actions offer philosophers a wealth of instances. We give examples of how philosophers (as well as historians) have looked into and analyzed material practices in cell biology, despite the fact that there is still much of the field of cell biology that has not been subject to philosophical study.

 

However, we begin by focusing more on theoretical concerns, looking at how the field of cell biology evolved and how metaphors were essential in influencing how scientists thought about cells. The debate over whether cells can be understood mechanically or whether a vitalist or hoist perspective is necessary comes next.
