Why, then, do we think we can teach the burden by scolding children, putting them down and taking other opportunities to behave and send them to their room? Shouldn't we "get back in the chair?" Shouldn't we “pick them up, dust them off, give them encouragement and instructions and then, as soon as possible, give them another chance to make a commitment?”

Should not a child who has been hurt by another child be kindly taught, encouraged to believe in his or her own personality, and then immediately given another chance to be kind?

Now, let’s take a quick look at the current wrap and gift exchange for Christmas. Why are we so effective in teaching this act of love, kindness, joy, and sharing? We are successful in this work for many of the same reasons that we are successful in teaching children to ride bicycles… allowing children to learn from experience. Even before they are old enough to understand much about what is happening to them, we begin to let them know by knowing about the gifts you give them.
