Leadership is a process of influencing other people to work willingly for the achievement of group objectives.

According to Chester Bernard, "leadership is the quality of behavior of individuals, whereby they guide people or their activities in organizing efforts." 

 

Leadership is an indispensable part of management. An able leader ensures the integration of the subordinates' personal goals with the organization's goals.

To be a successful leader, we must possess the following leadership qualities : 


1. Self-confidence:

a good leader must have full confidence in himself and strong willpower. While initiating any course of action, he should have sufficient confidence to direct, guide, influence, and motivate his subordinates and boost their morale. 


2. Intelligence -

A good leader should have the mental ability to think scientifically and analyze problems accurately. He should be able to interpret clearly and determine accurately the problems faced by the group. 


3. Foresight -

A leader should have a sense of visualizing the future course of action. He should be able to devise his policies and programs based on such trends.


5. Maturity -

A good leader should possess emotional maturity and a cool temperament. He should have high tolerance power for frustration and stress. 


6. Motivation Drive -

He should have an inner urge to take the initiative and keep accomplishing something. He should possess the capacity to seek the willing co-operation of followers towards the achievement of group goals.


7. Human approach -

A good leader must possess the ability to provide emotional and psychological support to his followers. He should be sociable, cooperative,  friendly, and sympathetic. He must have a human touch. 


8. Integrity and Honesty -

A good leader must be sincere and honest towards his followers. He should be ready to solve the technical problems of his followers.

 
9. Technical Know-How -

He should have the edge over his followers in all technical matters. He should be ready to solve the technical problems of his followers. 


10. Ability to Communicate -

He should clearly understand the art of communication. He should have the capacity to present his view logically to convince others on controversial issues.


11. Rationale and Objective -

A leader must be rational in his approach while dealing with his followers. He should be free from bias and prejudice. 


12. Quick decision-making power -

A good leader should possess substantive decision-making power. In its absence,  the leader may look weak, work will get delayed, consumers will get dissatisfied, and ultimately the reputation of the organization get worsened. 


13. Full Courage -

Courage means whatever the leader feels should be strongly implemented. He should fearlessly stick to one decision and never falls prey to the feeling of his opponents. 


14. Physical Qualities -

A successful leader must possess sound health, adequate physical energy, untiring stamina, and physical physique. In addition, he must have an average height, weight, and impressive physical construction. 


15. Sense of Responsibility -

He should prepare to shoulder the responsibility for the consequences of his decisions and actions. He should be aware of the obligations attached to his position.
