No:1 Relax before bed. Take a deep breath, and listen to cool music. According to Dr Timothy Sharp of Sydney University, avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine will also help.
No:2 Sleep routine
Establish a sleep routine so that your body knows it is time to go to bed. By postponing your physical activities and following a routine before bedtime, your body will begin to associate some of these activities with sleep. This can be replaced by chamomile tea, which is known for calming the senses. Follow this with a hot bath or shower, heat will help lower your internal body temperature and tell your body to sleep.
No:3 Your bedroom is only for sleeping
Make your room a bedroom. Turn off the lights as soon as you get into bed. Do not read, eat, or watch television in your room, or do any other activities related to sleep. Make sure the room is dark and comfortable; put extra pillows on the bed and even teddy bears. Make your bedroom, a room where you will feel safe and comfortable right away, and best of all, a room where you will wish to sleep.
No:4 Relax and clear your mind
Clear your mind about daily activities or things to do tomorrow. Arrange uniforms, lunch, etc. Arrange in advance so that you do not have to worry.
No:5 Take time to get back to you
Instead of trying to force as much as you can during the day and finding that you did not leave much time for sleep, try to find shortcuts or solutions to give yourself less time. Make a double casserole and fry it over half overnight. Have lots of barbecues, using paper plates (wash a little). Offer to pay for children, or neighbors' children, to do other household chores.
No:6 A balanced diet helps to create a balanced mind
When you lack essential vitamins and minerals, your body cannot function very well. Get rid of junk food and hot drinks, and start a new life with good physical and mental health. Add regular exercise and watch your body respond to improved sleep.
No:7 Don't sleep in bed if you can't sleep
If you do not feel sleepy enough to be swept away, your mind will likely be troubled because you cannot sleep. This will make it very difficult for you to fall asleep each time you experience this. Do something that will distract you until you start to fall asleep and try to fall asleep again.
No:8 Medication may interfere with your sleep
It has been shown that some medications below may cause insomnia. Check with your doctor if you have insomnia and are taking any of these medications - amphetamines (diet pills), antidepressants, beta-blockers (heart and blood pressure), cimetidine (ulcers), clonidine (blood pressure), cortisone, diuretics (fluids), levodopa Parkinson, methyl dopa (blood pressure) and Ventolin (asthma).
No:9 Above all: de-stress
Sharp says depression is a serious cause of insomnia. Use some of the above strategies and try to eliminate as much stress from your life as possible, and ultimately reduce your insomnia.
