Top 10 tips for healthier teeth

We often forget how important our teeth are in our daily lives and fail to take proper care of them. If our smile isn't the same, our self-esteem suffers. Don't forget that our oral health affects our overall health, contributing to diseases like diabetes, endocarditis, and cardiovascular disease. There are several ways to maintaining healthy teeth. We've provided a list of 10 tips for healthier teeth to help you to improve the health and appearance of your smile.
It is in your hands to take care of your mouth; the vast majority of dental diseases are entirely preventable, and you can keep your teeth healthy and clean in just 5 minutes per day.

1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day.

One of the best tips for healthier teeth is to brush your teeth at least twice a day, morning and night. If possible, do so after each meal to avoid bacteria buildup. You should brush for 2 to 3 minutes total.

2. Brush with care

The American Dental Association has specific guidelines for brushing your teeth. Brush the outside, inside, and above-the-teeth surfaces of your teeth. It is recommended that you hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and move it back and forth in small circles. However, cleaning the inner surfaces of your front teeth, tilt your brush vertically, and make several up and down movements.

3. Acquire the appropriate toothbrush

There are soft, medium, and hard toothbrushes. Most dentists recommend a soft or medium toothbrush as the stiff bristles can damage tooth enamel or gum tissue over time. Always choose a brush with over-natural nylon bristles and replace your toothbrush every 3 months or after an illness such as a cold or flu.

4. Make use of fluoride-containing products.

The use of fluoride-containing mouthwash, toothpaste, and dental floss helps to harden the enamel of the teeth, making them more resistant to plaque and sugar, lowering the risk of dental cavities.

5. Brush  the tongue

Bacteria build up in the tongue's small crevices because it has a rough surface. The bacteria remain on the tongue until it is scraped away. Brushing the tongue is therefore essential for maintaining healthy teeth and preventing bad breath.

6. Use dental floss daily.

Flossing daily aids in the removal of bacteria and plaque that accumulates between your teeth. Wrap the floss ends around the index fingers of each hand and floss between and around each tooth to floss properly. Consult your dentist if you notice any blood or swelling while flossing. More information on proper flossing can be found here.

7. Limit your consumption of acidic beverages.

Soda, fruit juices, and wine are examples of acidic beverages. Acidic beverages dissolve the enamel on your teeth, causing cavities and sensitivity. If you drink acidic drinks, it is best to use a straw and follow up with water to help naturalize some acids.

8. Limit your intake of sugary foods.

Sugary foods contribute to tooth decay. Read nutrition facts and labels, make wise decisions, and choose low-sugar options to be more mindful of what you eat. Be aware that starchy foods, such as pasta and bread break down into sugar when they come into contact with saliva.

9. Obtain the necessary vitamins

Vitamins A, C, D, and K and the minerals calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus help maintain healthy muscles, hair, bones, immune systems, and teeth and gums. Consuming the right nutrients will help you resist infection and reduce your chances of developing tooth decay and gum disease.

10. Go to the dentist every six months.

It is advised that you visit your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and more frequently if you have gum disease or extensive cavities. If you have a toothache or bleeding gums, schedule an appointment as soon as possible so that your dentist can help control and treat the symptoms and causes.
