Top 10 Skincare Tips for Ladies.
Skin care should be an essential part of every lady’s health and beauty routine, but few ladies actually make the time to take care of their skin on a regular basis. Whether it’s due to a busy lifestyle or the perception that good skincare takes too much time, the problem often lies in not knowing how to properly take care of your skin – or even what products are worth using! This list of ten skin care tips will help any lady achieve beautiful, healthy-looking skin with very little effort!
1) Use sunscreen:
The best advice we can give anyone looking to care for their skin is: to wear sunscreen. Sunscreen is one of those things that you won’t realize its importance until it’s too late. Protecting your skin from UV rays is important because they can cause wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer. Make sure to protect yourself every day with a mineral sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. The good news is that there are tons of mineral sunscreens on the market now, so finding one isn’t hard. Try out some different brands and see what works best for you. Just make sure to reapply often! And if you have sensitive skin or live in a humid climate, try an organic formula instead—they tend to be more gentle on the skin than chemical-based ones.
2) Avoid alcohol:
As we age, our skin begins to lose its natural elasticity and collagen, which causes fine lines and wrinkles. It’s important to remember that alcohol can have a negative impact on your skin. Aside from eating well and getting lots of sleep, avoiding or limiting alcohol intake is a good idea if you want your skin to stay to look young and healthy. If you must indulge in a glass of wine with dinner, try not to let it get too late—you want to give your body enough time to recover! And while a glass of red might be better than white when it comes to heart health, when it comes to skin health there are no winners.
It may sound simple, but moisturizing really does make a difference: You might feel like you’re just putting water on your face when you apply moisturizer, but don’t underestimate how important hydration is. In fact, dermatologists recommend using an SPF-free moisturizer with hyaluronic acid as part of an anti-aging routine every day (even if you don't have oily skin). Hyaluronic acid acts as an antioxidant by helping the skin retain moisture.
3) Eat protein:
Eating protein helps keep skin looking young, smooth, and healthy. Skin is made of protein, so it’s important to eat some every day if you want your skin to stay looking its best. Foods high in protein include fish, chicken, turkey, and nuts. If you don’t eat meat or seafood, tofu or beans are good sources of plant-based protein. Nut butter is also a nutritious source of protein that can be used as a spread on whole-grain bread or toast with jam.
4) Drink less water:
We’ve been led to believe that we should be drinking lots of water every day to flush out our system. But truthfully, too much water can damage our skin by disrupting its natural pH balance and depleting it of vital nutrients. On top of that, dehydration can lead to fatigue, which makes us more prone to developing bags under our eyes.
5) Sleep 8 hours a day:
While it’s impossible to get more than 8 hours of sleep per night, don’t feel bad if you can’t – research has shown that getting 7 hours of sleep per night is just as beneficial. Sleep deprivation impairs your immune system and weakens your ability to fight illness and infection. Not only does your skin need sleep, but so do you! Make sure to get enough sleep each night (eight hours) and remember that a good night's rest isn't just about how many hours you're sleeping—you also need quality shut-eye. Keep a regular bedtime schedule, go into sleep mode around 8 p.m., and make sure there's no light (that means no electronics) in your bedroom 30 minutes before bedtime. For some people, stress causes acne breakouts. If you have sensitive skin or suffer from acne, try meditating or practicing yoga to help reduce stress levels. Stress hormones like cortisol are linked with an increase in sebum production, which leads to pimples on your face and body. Try relaxing activities like reading a book or listening to music when you’re stressed out instead of reaching for food or alcohol.
6) Exercise regularly:
Studies show that regular exercise can help us look and feel better than we otherwise would. It helps reduce stress, release endorphins, and boost our mood. But if you’re going to work out at all—which is important, both mentally and physically—you should definitely make sure you’re taking care of your skin while you do it. If you don’t, not only will you be uncomfortable (and therefore less likely to stick with a workout routine), but you could also damage your skin in ways that may take years to repair. Skincare basics are simple: Use sunscreen, drink lots of water, wear a hat in direct sunlight (especially when exercising outdoors), and don’t forget about moisturizer! You might think these tips are obvious or even unnecessary, but many people who exercise regularly neglect their skin—and suffer as a result.
7) Don’t use hot water on your face:
Hot water opens your pores, which helps remove dirt and oil. But hot water can also dry out your skin and lead to wrinkles. Limit hot showers to once a day, or opt for warm or cool showers instead. You can also use cold water on your face in place of toner; it works great! Just splash some cold water on your face after washing with warm water. The combination will close your pores and help your skin stay hydrated. Your skin will feel soft and smooth afterward. If you have sensitive skin, however, you may want to avoid cold water because it could cause redness or irritation. To test if your skin is too sensitive for cold water treatment, start by using lukewarm water and gradually increase its temperature until you reach room temperature (or even slightly warmer). Remember that any time you change up your routine, be sure to introduce new products one at a time so that you know what’s causing an adverse reaction if one occurs.
8) Stay out of the sun:
The sun is harmful to our skin and can cause us to age faster than we’d like. It’s recommended that women (and men!) wear sunscreen and try to stay out of direct sunlight during peak hours, which are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When you do go outside, make sure to cover up with long sleeves, pants, sunglasses, and hats or hoods whenever possible. Also, if you have any existing skin conditions, such as acne or rosacea, be sure to apply for extra protection when you’re in direct sunlight. In addition to applying sunscreen every day before heading outdoors, it might also be helpful to invest in a hat that will protect your face from UV rays.
9) Get enough rest:
Getting enough rest is one of, if not THE most important things you can do to keep your skin healthy. While everyone needs different amounts of sleep to function at their best, research shows that a minimum of seven hours each night is ideal. If you’re having trouble sleeping or feeling fatigued during daylight hours, consider what you may be doing that is preventing yourself from getting sufficient shut-eye—and adjust accordingly. For example, if you’re watching TV before bed and, it’s keeping you up later than usual, try setting an earlier bedtime. Remember: it’s better to get less sleep and feel refreshed than more sleep and feel exhausted!
10) Hydrate your skin:
Hydration is crucial to healthy skin, so drink plenty of water. When you’re dehydrated, your skin tends to look dry and wrinkled. Dehydration also makes your body more susceptible to premature aging, so stay hydrated! If you notice that your skin looks dry or feels tight (or if it just doesn’t look great overall), drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes; if it doesn’t look any better, drink another glass and try again after 15 minutes. You should see some improvement with two glasses of water—and keep drinking until you do. It might take up to four glasses in total before your skin returns to its normal state. The best way to tell if you’re properly hydrated? Look at your urine: Clear urine means you’re well-hydrated, while darker yellow or brown urine indicates dehydration. Also, remember that proper hydration helps improve skin elasticity and reduces wrinkles by keeping skin cells plump.
