Jordan's standing as one of the greatest athletes of all time has been solidified by his ongoing appeal and iconic status.
Michael Jeffrey Jordan, a businessman and former professional basketball player from the United States, was born on February 17, 1963, and goes by his initials MJ. According to his official NBA profile, "by acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time."[10] With the Chicago Bulls, he played in the NBA for fifteen seasons and won six titles. In the 1980s and 1990s, he had a significant role in the global popularization of basketball and the NBA,[11] turning him into a symbol of global culture.[12]
Jordan was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, and enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1981. He scored the game-winning basket in the 1982 national championship game against Georgetown while only a freshman. Jordan left North Carolina following his junior year, having won College Player of the Year in both his sophomore and junior years. In 1984 in Los Angeles and in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, he guided the U.S. basketball team to Olympic gold medals.
The Chicago Bulls selected Jordan in the 1984 NBA Draft. He was named Rookie of the Year in his rookie season (1984–1985) after leading the NBA in scoring. He missed the majority of the next season due to a broken foot, but he bounced back to lead the league in scoring for seven straight seasons, averaging roughly 33 points per game. In the 1986–87 season, he became just the second player, after Wilt Chamberlain, to score 3,000 points in one season. Jordan received five NBA MVP awards (1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, and 1998) in addition to the 1988 Defensive Player of the Year award. Jordan temporarily retired in October 1993 to pursue a career in professional basketball after leading the Bulls to their third straight championship.
