Thoothukudi: Thoothukudi is slowly recovering from the rains and floods.. While the relief work is picking up speed here, the District Corporation has issued an important announcement to the volunteers.
Thoothukudi has been caught in unprecedented rains.. As a result, areas including Thoothukudi City, Tiruchendur, Kayalpattinam have been submerged in floodwaters.. Roads have been cut off, electricity connections and telecommunication facilities have also been completely cut off. Due to this, the flood victims could not be rescued immediately.
Thoothukudi:
After that, many departments like National Disaster Response Team, Police, Fire Rescue Department and Revenue Department are involved in the rescue work. The flood affected people are being rescued by helicopter and National Disaster Response Force and are being taken to the camps.
Many people from outside districts like Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy are also helping them as much as they can. Apart from camps, people have taken shelter in temples and mosques.
Volunteers:
In many places there are situations where the relief goods provided by the government are not fully available..or not enough..For such people, volunteers come to help.
More than 10,000 people from Srivaikundam and its surrounding areas like Arel, Campalabad, Attur, Mukhani etc. have been accommodated in temples and wedding halls.
Food Packs:
But cooking food and giving it to the affected people is a big challenge.. the reason is that the main roads here are not flooded.. so they have to take a cargo vehicle and travel for hours to buy vegetables from the markets. Having to keep in a common place, have meals and carry food packages to different areas..
Many streets are impassable due to waist-deep water. So, the volunteers, on a three-wheeled vehicle called a tricycle, go through the flood waters with food packets, milk packets, biscuits, bread, water bottles.
Power cut :
Apart from those staying in camps, wedding halls, mosques and temples, these food packages are also being distributed to people who are stuck in the villages due to the cut off of roads. Daily, food is prepared for more than 15 thousand people..
As some of the houses are in the suburbs, relief is being provided from house to house.. For the past 5 days, volunteers have been running around helping those staying in temples and mosques, putting aside caste and religious differences and presenting only "humanity".
Heavy rain:
in this case, Thoothukudi Mayor Jagan Periyaswamy has issued a press release.. in which, "Due to unprecedented heavy rains, the water stagnant in the residential areas of Thoothukudi Corporation is being removed under the supervision of Ministers and Members of Parliament as per the Chief Minister's order.
As some of the volunteers who distribute relief goods in flood-affected areas go only to certain areas, people are dissatisfied with the corporation management. I request the volunteers who bring relief items in the metropolitan area to contact the Corporation Health Officers and provide the items," it said.
