Sharma was born on April 30, 1987, in Ban sod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, to Porrima Sharma and Gurunath Sharma, who both worked as housekeepers for storage facilities for transportation companies.
Due to his father's meager salary, Sharma was raised by his grandparents and uncles in Burial.
In 1999, Sharma utilized his uncle's funds to enrol in a cricket camp. He performed admirably in the Harris and Giles Shield school cricket competitions, opening the innings and getting a century.
In March 2005, at Gwalior, Rohit Sharma made his List A debut for West Zone against Central Zone in the Deader Trophy. In the same event, he played against North Zone at Udaipur and posted an undefeated innings of 142 in 123 balls.
In July 2006, in Darwin, Sharma made his First-class debut for India A against New Zealand A. In the match against Gujarat, when he made his Randi Trophy debut for his First-class team Mumbai in the 2006–2007 season, he struck 205 off 267 balls.
Initially, Rohit Sharma was chosen for the limited-overs games on India's 2007 tour to Ireland. On September 20, 2007, Rohit Sharma finally made his debut on the international stage as he helped India defeat South Africa in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 by batting an unbroken 50 (which took 40 deliveries).
Sharma then went on to defeat Pakistan in the game's finale by scoring 30 runs off of only 16 balls.
On November 18, 2007, in Jaipur, against Pakistan, Sharma hit his first half-century in an ODI. He amassed 235 runs at an average of 33.57 during the 2007–08 Australian Commonwealth Bank Series, including 2 fifty-sixes.
In February 2010, Rohit Sharma received a call to join the Indian Test team. On May 28, 2010, he defeated Zimbabwe and recorded his first ODI century (114).
At Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Sharma made his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2013 as part of Tendulkar's last Test series. After Shikhar Drawn, he had the second-best debut score by an Indian with a 177.
Sharma's first ODI half-century came against Pakistan on November 18, 2007, at Jaipur. During the 2007–2008 Australian Commonwealth Bank Series, he scored 235 runs at a 33.57 batting average, including 2 fifty-sixes.

In November 2013, as part of shin Tendulkar's last Test series, Sharma made his Test debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against the West Indies. He had the second-best debut Indian score, behind Shikhar Drawn, with a 177.
On October 11, while trying to beat South Africa's total of 303, he made 150 off 133 balls in a losing effort. He recorded two consecutive hundreds in the ODI series during the 2015–16 Australian tour, as well as a 99 in the decisive match. He was the series' leading scorer with 441 runs scored in five games, earning him the title of Man-of-the-Series.
Rohit Sharma scored his third double century of 208 runs, not out, on December 13 while serving as captain.
When Sharma scored the joint-fastest century off 35 balls during a Twenty20 International match against Sri Lanka on December 22, 2017, at Hockey Stadium in Indore, he matched the previous record.
On July 8, 2018, Sharma also rose to the fifth overall and second place during the T20I series against England.
He struck his fifth hundred in Australia on January 12, 2019, in the first ODI against Australia at the SCG, becoming the only Indian to reach that milestone in five ODI played on Australian soil.
He was selected as the vice-captain of India's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. He achieved his 12,000th run in international cricket for India when scoring 122 runs off 144 balls in India's opening game against South Africa.
Sharma became the first batsman to record five hundred in a World Cup game against Sri Lanka on July 6, 2019.
