Netflix's success may eventually lead to cable unbundling. Cable customers may pick and choose channels instead of paying for a full package of channels.
The first commercial streaming service took off in 2007 when internet speeds and computer power got fast enough to make streaming possible. In that year, Netflix launched its streaming service. Using their devices, customers can watch TV shows or movies on computers, TV screens, tablets, phones, or gaming devices. Consumers could watch what they wanted, when they wanted, and how they wanted, without being limited to a schedule, interrupted by commercials, or even having to leave their homes. Video rental businesses were pretty much killed by the last innovation. On-demand content was soon offered by cable companies and TV networks. Original content is on the rise was also a risky and expensive proposition for Netflix to start producing original content.5 At a time when networks generally approved shows based on pilots that met certain metrics, Netflix offered upfront contracts to series producers and showrunners.

Around 167 million people worldwide subscribe to Netflix. In a growing way, it has disrupted the television programming model and the cable industry. As Netflix contends with Amazon, Google, and Disney, competition is becoming more and more fierce. Several critically acclaimed and talked-about new series began airing on Netflix instead of the established networks, including "House of Cards," "Orange Is the New Black," and "The Crown."7 Original content has helped Netflix gain a loyal fan base and boost its stock price. The birth of binge-watching Netflix created the binge-watching trend around the same time, uploading complete seasons of established TV series at once instead of broadcast and cable TV's once-a-week installment schedule. To recruit and retain top talent, Netflix's production method has led several TV networks to become more flexible and aggressive. Keeping up with the competition requires innovation. In addition, Netflix has innovated by aggressively mining user data. Originally, this data was intended to serve customers and help them find content that would appeal to them. According to these data, Netflix now determines what genres and talent it should pursue based on real demand. Netflix faces competition from Amazon, Google, and Disney, among others, for programming and viewers. That's the price of breaking the mold for how television is made and watched.
