E-commerce is a global phenomenon that is growing at a healthy rate in almost every country. These are the 10 countries that are most successful in electronic commerce.

The e-commerce industry is continuously growing all over the world. With each passing day, new eCommerce markets emerge and established markets reach new milestones. Here's a look at the world's largest eCommerce marketplaces (in terms of sales) by country, based on eMarketer data published by Oberlo and Ecommerce Trends.

The World's Largest E-commerce Marketplaces.

If you're considering entering one of the markets below, you should review the local laws for doing business in that area, and if you're looking to expand your operation, check out this list of the best tools for growing an eCommerce business.

China.

Annual online sales: $2.78 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 52%

China is the world's largest e-commerce market, led by Alibaba Group's e-commerce subsidiaries: Taobao, Alibaba.com, and Tmall. With an annual growth rate of 21%, China is also one of the fastest-growing e-commerce markets.

United States.

Annual online sales: $843 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 19%

After dominating the world of e-commerce for over a decade, the United States is currently the second-largest e-commerce market. Led by e-commerce giants Amazon and eBay, the US is experiencing healthy growth in e-commerce across all sectors and, for the most part, has been the house of innovation for e-commerce trends.

United Kingdom.

Annual online sales: $169 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 4.8%

Despite its small size, the UK is a big player in e-commerce and comfortably secures third place on this list. Amazon UK, eBay UK, and Asos are the leading e-commerce websites in the UK, and the country has one of the highest percentages of total retail sales in e-commerce.

Japan

Annual online sales: $144 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 3%

Ranking fourth on the list, Japan is the leading player in m-commerce (which, of course, is the future of e-commerce) in the world. Rakuten is Japan's leading e-commerce platform, which over the years has acquired many e-commerce sites around the world, including the UK's Play.com.

South Korea.

Annual online sales: $120 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 2.5%

The country with the fastest wireless Internet, South Korea, ranks fifth on this list. South Korea is also one of the leading e-commerce markets. The biggest e-commerce names in the country include Gmarket and Coupang.

Germany.

Annual online sales: $101.5 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 2.1%

Germany is the second-largest e-commerce market in Europe. Amazon is also a major player in the German market. EBay and local online retailer Otto are two other major e-commerce players in the country.

France.

Annual online sales: $80 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 1.6%

With local players like Cdiscount and Veepee, the French e-commerce market ranks sixth in the world. However, like other major European e-commerce marketplaces, Amazon has overtaken local brands to reign in France.

India.

Annual online sales: $67.5 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 1.4%

India is one of the fastest-growing eCommerce markets. According to eMarketer, thanks to an increase in the number of retailers joining the online shopping ranks, India was projected to see digital sales increase by 27% in 2021.

Canada.

Annual online sales: $44 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 1.3%

Canada is a great e-commerce market but with little competition. Naturally, Amazon dominates the country's e-commerce market, followed by Walmart. Given the opportunities that Canada presents as an e-commerce market, foreign brands are also trying to get a piece.

Spain.

Annual online sales: $37 billion

E-commerce share of total retail sales: 0.72%

Three main companies dominate the e-commerce market in Spain. According to E-commerce DB, Amazon, El Corte Ingles, and Pc Components represent 30% of all online income in Spain.
