Giraffe, with a tall structure, crane-shaped neck, gnarled knee, and tapered legs, are the tallest species in animals kingdoms. An African artiodactyle mammal found mostly in grassland and open woodlands in East Africa. The most endangered species is also found in reserves of SouthAfrica. However, the following are the top 10 interesting facts about Graffe.
1. No Regular Drinking.
It evidenced well that Giraffe does not drink daily. It is because they fulfill theirs water demand through plants. They quench their thirst through leaves and grasses. They mostly eat grass and leaves. It is believed that their habit of eating leaves evolved their neck to reach the height of a tree. Giraffes love to eat thorny Acacia trees.
2. Giraffe is social.
A giraffe is as social as an elephant. Books of 1991 described it as unsocial, socially distant, having no social bonds with its fellows. However, recent studies in New Search from Univerisity Bristol published in the Mammal Review suggest that Graffe has been misperceived and misunderstood. They have certain patterns of living and interactions. They are polite in nature, loveable, and social. They have a complex social system. They Live in the company and share food with fellows. They are not like lions, which have master social distancing and are self-isolation experts.
3. REM Sleep
Unfortunately, most of the animals can not. But luckily, like humans, Graffe has REM Sleep. REM is Rapid Eyes Movement sleep. During REM, heart rate and breathing quicken, and intensive sleep occur. It's a stage of active and intensive dreams.
A giraffe is like a human lucky to have a deep sleep and a dreaming world. Some believe it sleeps while standing; however, they can rest while standing, but they lie down with their head and resting back on its rump and enjoy REM Sleep. It is assumed that humble creature Graffe, while sleeping, continues ruminating and browsing.
4. Unique Coat pattern
Their body is quite interesting, appealing and eye-catching. They look quite polite and easily recognizable. Their body is covered with a coat pattern that makes them universally different. Their coat pattern is different from other animals, but even within doesn't match like ours- human finger. Our fingerprints don't match with any of us. The same is true about their coat pattern. One Giraffe's coat pattern doesn't match with any other. They have a unique pattern of the coat.
5. Captivated live long
Giraffe mortality rate, of course, varies from region to region and climate to climate, depending on different conditions. Generally, it's believed that they can not live longer than 25 years. However, they can live long if captivated.
Few Giraffes were captivated in 2000 in the conservation projects of Northwest Nambia, which are still alive till today.
6. Tallest Creature in Animal Kingdom
This is the only species found to be with an extremely elongated neck and head, up to 2.4 meters (7.9 ft) at an angle of 50-60 degrees. Like humans, they have 7 vertebrae in their neck; unlike ours, each is 10 meters long. While fighting other animals, it uses its long neck; it is called necking.
It is believed that its neck has evolved due to competition of food. Evolutionary principles of survival of fittest and adaptation are considered a few scientific reasons for its tallest look.
7. Colourful Tongue
The majority of animals have no coloration of the tongue. Giraffe has a colorful tongue. The front of the tongue has a dark black color that protects its tongue from frequent exposure to sunlight, whereas its base is pink and purple, giving it a defense against bitter taste and thorny food.
The Giraffe tongue is quite dexterous. It has thickened papillae that help protect them from spiky and vicious thorns. It also uses its tongue as a defense mechanism against thorny leaves.
8. Role of Graffe's Spots and Patches
It has wonderful spots and patches outside its body. These colorful spots on its body determine the personality and outlook and play the role of camouflage. More importantly, its sophisticated system of blood vessels lies under these patches. Not only this, but these spots release heat and maintain temperature. They are actively playing the role of homeostatic in Graffe.
9. Small Heart - High blood Pressure
Giraffe's head is 2 meters away from its heart. But it has efficient high blood pressure (280/180 mm hg), which is twice compared as humans.
Recently researchers found that its heart cavity has little space; thus giraffe has a relatively small heart. Its pumping power comes from the left ventricle and thick muscle wall. When it is running heart can beat up to 170 beats per minute, and during rest, its heart rate is around 40-90 beats per minute.
10. TWIGA Tracker: Technology to save & Observe Graffe
The giraffe is the most endangered species. Apart from climate causes, it is mostly preyed on by its big enemies, lions, leopard, and African wild dogs.
Some of the wildlife and taxonomical studies suggest that so far, seven species are extinct, such as Graffa Jumae and Graffa Stillei, few to mention.
However, recently Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), in coordination with Uganda Wild Life Authority (UWA), begin the efficient ever GPS Sattelite tagging called TWIGA tracker to observe their special movement and protect them in wild space.
Very informative article 🖤
