We have read about many briefly successful people. They win a gold medal, make a fortune, star in one of the best movies, and then disappear. Or, those like Marilyn Monroe and Howard Hughes achieved extraordinary success by losing their lives. These examples do not encourage me!
My focus and interest are on people who seem to be doing well in many areas of life, and they do it repeatedly throughout their lives. For fun, I think of Paul Newman and Bill Cosby. I think of Ben and Jerry (ice cream moguls) and the owner of a well-known building material store that donated money to charities in business. Jimmy Carter has had good health as a Marine officer, husband, businessman, politician, and now as a world-class mediator and philanthropist. We all know the examples of people moving from one success to another.
These are the people who encourage me! I have read them, and I have seen that they have the same characteristics:
1. They work hard! Yes, they play hard, too! They wake up in the morning, rarely complaining, expecting work from others, but expecting unfamiliar work. Repeated, high-quality success begins with the realization that hard work pays off.
2. They are incredibly curious and eager to learn. They read, ask questions and read - always! An interesting point, though: While most of them do well in school, the difference is that they apply or apply what they learn. Repetitive success is not about memorizing facts; it is about taking information and creating it, constructing it, or using it in new and important ways. Successful people want to learn all about it!
3. They communicate. They know many people, and they know many kinds of people. They listen to friends, neighbors, coworkers, and bartenders. They don’t have to be “team life”; in fact, many are quiet and shy, but they value people and relationships. Successful people have a Rolodex full of people who value their friendship and return their calls.
4. They work for themselves and never give up! While the “miracles of the night” become arrogant and disappear quickly, truly successful people work on their personality, leadership skills, management skills, and other life details. When a relationship or business contract is sour, they think they can learn from it and expect to do better in the future. Successful people are not tolerant of mistakes; they are fixing themselves!
5. They are amazingly creative. They walked around asking, "Why?" They see new combinations, new opportunities, new opportunities, and challenges where others see problems or limitations. They woke up in the middle of the night shouting, "I got it!" They ask for advice, try things out, consult a professional and amateur, always looking for a better, faster, cheaper solution. Successful people build things up!
6. They are confident and take responsibility. Marvelous people do not worry about being blamed and do not waste time complaining. They make decisions and move on. They are sometimes criticized for taking this too seriously - Jimmy Carter was carrying his bag, and the President "should not" do that! The most successful people take action and accept the responsibilities of success.
7. They are usually relaxed and keep their point of view. Even in times of stress or turmoil, the most successful people keep their balance, knowing the value of time, humor, and patience. They are less likely to panic or make hasty decisions. Successfully successful people breathe easily, ask the right questions, and make sound decisions, even in trouble.
8. The most successful people live in the modern era. They know that "Now" is the only time they can control. They have the gift of "looking people in the eye, listening to what is said, enjoying food or good wine, music or playing with a child. They seem to be calm, and they do a lot!
9. They “look to the horizon” to see the future. They see the styles, they see the change, they see the shifts, and they feel the nuances that others are missing. A basketball player wearing a Nikes is a small thing; the neighbor child you are wearing is interesting, your wanted child is an opportunity to invest! The most successful people live in the present, with one eye to the future!
10. Successful people often respond quickly! When the investment does not work, they sell. When they saw an opportunity, they called. When an important relationship breaks down, they take time to rebuild it. When new technologies, competition, or economic change need to be adjusted, they are the first and quickest to respond.
These qualities work together, giving great success to those who are often successful. Being unsatisfied students, they can tactfully respond when they change. Because their personal relationships are strong, they have good mentors and a storehouse of interest when things go wrong. And in the end, they are not genetics! It can be read! They are comfortable and are skills that you can use.
