1) The Island of the Dolls, Mexico
The Island of Mexico is home to one of the most chilling tourist attractions on Earth, a mysterious island called The Island of the Dolls. The island sits just off the coast of Mexico City and is named after its sole inhabitant: Don Julián Santana Barrera. He collected dolls from his travels around the world and hung them up by string over his entire property. When he passed away in 2001, legend has it that he wanted to keep entertaining children with his dolls even though he was gone so people still go there today to see the eerie sight for themselves .
Aokigahara Forest (aka Suicide Forest), Japan: Aokigahara Forest is located near Mount Fuji, Japan and it’s been popular as a place for Japanese tourists to hike. However, what many people don’t know about this forest are all the suicides that have occurred there . It's estimated that more than 500 people have committed suicide within these woods since 1950.
2) The Catacombs of Paris, France
The Catacombs of Paris, France are a series of old tunnels and quarries that are now open to the public as an ossuary (a place to store human bones). The catacombs became a prominent feature of Parisian culture when they were used as a dumping ground for bodies during the French Revolution. In total, it's estimated that more than 6 million people have been buried there.
3) The Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic
The Sedlec Ossuary is one of the most famous and horrifying tourist attractions in Europe. Located about 60 km from Prague, it is a small chapel containing more than 50,000 human skeletons (some estimates have been as high as 70,000). The walls are made up of stacks and stacks of bones forming decorations and patterns. It was originally constructed to hold the remains of around 40,000 people killed during the Black Plague.
4) The Tower of London, England
The Tower of London is one of London's most iconic landmarks and it has been a royal residence, fortress, and prison. The tower was originally built by William the Conqueror in 1080 as part of his ring of steel to guard against invasion from Scotland. It was a formidable structure, with walls nearly 30 feet thick and surrounded by a moat which could be flooded at a moment's notice. The prisoners were housed on the upper floors where they could be kept under constant surveillance.

Aokigahara, also known as The Sea of Trees, is a forest near Mount Fuji where people go to commit suicide.
6) The Door to Hell, Turkmenistan
The Door to Hell is located in Turkmenistan and it's one of the most terrifying places on Earth. It's a burning gas crater that has been on fire for over four decades and there are no plans to put it out any time soon. The Door to Hell was created when Soviet scientists set off an underground nuclear device, expecting it would lead to natural gas being released. Instead, they got this monstrous hole in the ground. The locals have all sorts of stories about what this terrifying place is used for - everything from housing goats to being a vortex into hell itself.
7) The Ancient Ram Inn, England
The Ancient Ram Inn in England is one of the most haunted places in Europe. The current owner, Bruce Chatwin, has spent a lot of time and energy restoring this old pub to its original glory and has turned it into an inn with some serious ghost stories. Built around 1620, this inn was once used as a meeting place for smugglers. There are rumors that there's still some contraband hidden somewhere on the property, which could account for all of the reports of paranormal activity.
8) The Capuchin Catacombs, Sicily
The Capuchin Catacombs are located in Palermo, Italy, and were created when a Franciscan monk took over a monastery. The catacombs house about 8000 bodies. There is also an ossuary of around 300 skulls and bones. These two elements combine to create one of the most terrifying places on Earth. Some visitors have reported hearing voices or feeling like they're not alone while visiting this location.
9) The Edinburgh Vaults, Scotland
The Edinburgh Vaults is an underground series of chambers which were built in 1817 and used to store goods, mainly whisky, for import and export. The site has been abandoned since about 1990 but still attracts many visitors who are fascinated by it's dark history.
Visitors can only access the Vaults through guided tours, which last around 30 minutes. The tours cost £15 per person and can be booked online or at one of the ticket desks at Edinburgh Waverley train station.
10) The Island of Poveglia, Italy
Poveglia Island is a small, uninhabited island located in the Venetian Lagoon, off the coast of Italy. It has a long and dark history. It was once home to a mental hospital which housed patients with infectious diseases, as well as victims of torture and war. The hospital has been abandoned for decades and is said to be haunted by ghosts who roam its halls. Visitors report seeing apparitions and hearing moans and screams coming from inside.
