Snakes are one of the most intriguing animals on the planet, and they serve an essential part in the health and well-being of our environment. There is a variation of fascinating facts about snakes, including their behavior, habits, and habitat.

Though the exact number of snake bites is unknown, an estimated 5.4 million people are bitten each year, with up to 2.7 million envenomings.
Snakebites kill between 81 000 and 138 000 people each year, and they inflict three times as many surgical procedures and other severe injuries.
Venomous snake bites can result in paralysis, making it difficult to breathe, bleeding disorders, which can lead to a fatal hemorrhage, irreversible kidney failure, and tissue damage, resulting in permanent impairment and limb amputation.
The most vulnerable are agricultural workers and children. Due to their lesser body mass, children often endure more severe consequences than adults.

Before the advent of antivenin, black mamba bites were almost always fatal, usually within about 20 minutes. Antivenin is still not widely available in the rural parts of the mamba’s range, and mamba-related deaths are still frequent.

Almost two-thirds (64 percent) occurred in major cities and inner-regional areas. Approximately 44% of all those who died due to an allergic response to an insect bite were hospitalized.

Snakes have evolved to smell with their tongue and by using their Jacobson’s organ in the roof of their mouth. It has such a long tongue with multiple receptors that can detect varying levels of chemical stimuli. “Smelling in stereo” has also been used to describe their scent.

Snakes don’t blink and have to sleep with their eyes wide open. To protect their eyes, they have a lining linked to each one. The membrane shields them from predators and is known as the ‘brille,’ which means ‘glasses’ in German.

 Snakes are different from mammals because they lay eggs. Snakes living in colder climates have live births because the eggs wouldn’t survive outside. While approximately 70% of snakes lay eggs, others don’t, and that’s why they’re classified as reptiles rather than mammals.

 

10 . They are “solar-powered” and rely entirely on external heat or light sources

Reptiles are ectothermic, meaning their body temperature is variable and regulated by external sources. Unlike mammals and birds, snakes can’t control their body temperature. This means they need to use sources of heat, like the sun, to warm up.
