#1 A natural leader
Despite not being the oldest of the children, Thomas rapidly distinguishes himself from his two brothers, Arthur (the oldest) and John (the younger). He certainly stands out as the leader of the Shelby family because he is more ambitious, bold, and most importantly more intelligent and disciplined. He is brutal and cruel, yet all he wants is more justice for his family. His icy charisma and ability to get his hands dirty when required will finish painting the picture of the charismatic leader he personifies.
#2 A second English grace
Thomas Shelby's persona intrigues and draws attention from all directions. Even if this one is noteworthy for its morals and activities, no one can deny that it has a 1920s gangster appearance. The Shelby family is usually dressed to the nines: three-piece suit, round-neck shirt, newsboy (with the fabled razor blade), boots, and pocket watch. Their intention? Encourage the rest of the world by demonstrating their wealth, influence, and respectability. They have a look that, when paired with a risky haircut, gives them unwavering charisma and confidence.
#3 Excellent Mastermind
We know that Thomas Shelby would always be one step ahead from the beginning of the first season. It starts with the fixing of the races through the staging of an Asian woman blessing a horse. Because the horse wins the race, more and more gamblers place larger and more frequent wagers. Tommy will make him lose so that he can keep all of the earnings once the entire community has agreed to
wager on the horse.
#4 Master of Communications
Thomas Shelby never enters negotiations in a vulnerable position. His aunt Polly gives him advice to start conversations when he is in trouble during the first season when Inspector Campbell discredits him with the populace. We don't haggle in a weak position, we're going to launch a counterattack before, Tommy responds. "You don't negotiate when you're on the back foot, we'll strike a blow back first," he says. He then made the decision to burn the king's portraits in front of the media in order to inform Churchill of the unrest in Birmingham. This causes the power dynamics to change during the following negotiations.
#5 Overworked
Thomas Shelby is not the type to request a break. He literally works while under the influence of drugs (and other narcotics), all in the name of the family business. And when he finally makes the decision to give himself some space (at the end of the previous season), his resurrected demons nearly drive him insane. He comes to the logical conclusion that the holidays are not for him once he is back in Birmingham.
#6 His gypsy background
The Shelby family, who have lived in Birmingham for several generations, are of gypsy descent. Although Tommy rejects religion, mysticism and gypsy ideas are nevertheless prevalent throughout the series. The Shelbys are constantly working to redefine their standing despite this solid family bond. Advance in society by assuming a new role that their origins had not initially planned for them.
#7 Opportunist despite the risk
The opportunity increases as the risk does. And it's undeniable that Thomas Shelby enjoys taking chances. He finds an impressive cargo of government-owned weapons during the first season. The entire clan wants to get rid of a poisonous find before it turns against them. Tommy disagrees, though. These weapons provide him access to more power and a chance to compete at a higher level. He will repeatedly risk his life in this risky game, but in the end, his ability to swim around sharks will show him to be correct.
#8 Consistency in discipline
These various pursuits are proof that Thomas Shelby is a versatile and disciplined individual. Broker of crooked bets, horse breeder, racketeer, industrial leader, crisis negotiator, or even government snitch. He wears all the hats, which gives him access to a little more money but more importantly, power. He must exhibit excellent work discipline in order to accomplish his goals. In addition to having a (slight) propensity toward drunkenness, Tommy needs to use an iron will to get everything done. His organization's recklessness frequently knocks him off his hinges despite his always-calm and temperate attitude.
#9 Captive of his demons
Tommy is frequently regarded as a hero because he returned from France with numerous medals during the First World War. Even though he is aware of how to exploit it against Inspector Campbell (who has never engaged in combat), he is nevertheless extremely scarred by this incident in his life. The scars of battle are ever-present and constantly resurface. With his pal Danny first, who is experiencing severe post-traumatic stress, and then with Arthur, whose behavior may quickly change from canine mania to joyful party animal. However, the war knew how to create Tommy's often chilly, cold personality. Even death is no longer terrifying to him.
#10 Prepared to Die
Each of us will eventually die. The only remaining query is "when?" After a month? After ten years? Next day? possibly even now. Everybody dreads her. In France, Thomas Shelby "is already dead." After then, everything that occurs to him is just a bonus; he has been given an extra life. He is definitely determined to take advantage of it, but more importantly, it increases his resistance to the blows of these adversaries. He never acts out of fear; instead, his actions are deliberate, firm, and unwavering. He always weighs the risks he takes and is fully aware of the repercussions if he fails. This assurance in the presence of death allows him the willpower to fully live the life to which he aspires.
