1. Super Mario

As Super Mario for N.E.S. made its way worldwide in 1985, no one knew what to expect. Would it be a good platformer? More of a driving-type game? Well, one thing was sure. Super Mario was going to be AWESOME! It just had to be!

And yes, it’s a challenging game, with crazy platforming sections that’ll have you drenched in sweat. But the speed of it all is very satisfying, and the difficulty is just a perk to the overall experience. The music is very catchy, and as long as you don’t expect it to be Super Mario U.S.A., this will satisfy you.

2. Bioshock

Is this game for everyone? Not. But what is a gamer to do when the games that are supposed to be complex, challenging, and soul-crushing are often too simple?

You have to go with what you know, and to me, that is a game about fighting your way through a floating city filled with flying brains and spore monsters. Bioshock gave me nightmares as a kid, and I feel this game will provide you with some scary ones as an adult.

I played this game during my college days when I was a young adult who was just now discovering games as an adult, and this game has had a profound impact on the way I view gaming as a whole.

3. Zelda

While not the most original game ever made, Nintendo was the first to formulate a formula to make a very successful video game. Games like “Pacman,” “Ms. Pac-Man,” “Space Invaders,” and many more now famous games got their beginnings from the Zelda series.

The Legend of Zelda series is still being developed in more modern Nintendo consoles, the Nintendo Wii. Currently, it is on its fifth generation console, “Wii U,” and so far, its newest game, “Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” has been pretty successful.

4. Mass Effect

BioWare built this fantastic game that stands today among the best video games of all time, in my opinion. You play the role of an Engineer Commander named Commander Shepard. You are a Commander for the O.S.I. (Organization of Scientific International). You are sent on a top-secret mission to an abiotic planet named Let-Del III to find out the truth behind its disappearance. It is a highly emotional, fast-paced, suspenseful experience that you need to experience for yourself.

Another great thing about this game is that it mixes many forms of entertainment, which is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. You can explore an alien biotic planet, fight against the enemy and save the universe while understanding the different life-forms of the earth.

5. Tetris

Video games aren’t only a way to pass the time during school days. Over the past four decades, the growing popularity of video games has exploded, especially after Tetris was released in 1984. With Tetris, a genius game maker challenged the world with an impossible challenge: Solving a puzzle of sorts by using a series of geometric shapes to progress through a tower of falling blocks. A game of Tetris usually starts with two rectangular shapes on the top row of the playing field. By rotating these two shapes vertically and horizontally, they gradually become smaller to move to the bottom row. As the shapes disappear, so does the block within the puzzle.

6. Resident Evil

Resident Evil is possibly the most intriguing horror game series ever created. Capcom has been milking the Resident Evil name and trying to release a game every couple of years. One of the most incredible things about Resident Evil is the way you view the games. This is because they are set in a dark atmosphere, you play as a police officer, and some of the shots you take can make you blind or deafening. Resident Evil is set in the fictional Raccoon City Research Facility, and the main game set there is where Resident Evil is at its best. It’s fascinating to play and also tough; it’s one of those games you can’t skip through; it’s just too good. From classic puzzles and dodging a helicopter, you will be trying your hardest to survive this series.

7. God of War

God of War is arguably the most notable game on this list. And it still inspires many game developers today. From developing PSVR games to the Horizon Zero Dawn title, God of War has been a success story for Sony.

Sony released three games in the God of War series: God of War (2005), God of War II (2007), and God of War III (2010). It was followed by three expansions, The White March (2012), The Lost Art of Loading Dogs (2013), and Blood and Wine (2016). These expansions expanded the narrative, gameplay mechanics, and, most importantly, the core story that Kratos tells us.

8. Street Fighter II

Seriously, I know it was 25 years ago, but this still seems to be one of the best games of all time, no contest. The game’s popularity would spark a Mario craze that would last until well after Street Fighter II was released in the arcades. Capcom launched the console version in 1994 and would see it spawn multiple sequels, but the original game remains one of the most iconic of all time.

9. Call of Duty

C.O.D. Three of the “Modern Warfare” series. A good sequel that moved the series on with newer technology. The story of a good soldier that is an ex-police officer and a man named C.I.A. Agent. A good movie that is played in numerous movie theaters and one that many people (Teenagers) look up to when thinking of career paths (the same role).

10. Grand Theft Auto

While its sequel seems a bit more depressing and violent, G.T.A.’s take on 80’s big hair and distorted beer bellies was way more than a mere Hollywood spoof. Especially when it was first released, it broke box office records and helped propel the 3rd party video game market into the mainstream. Set on fictionalized versions of southern California, the game’s three main characters can either be controlled in third-person or first-person perspective, with one character's actions affecting the others' activities. It was way before the resurgence of first-person games that you could play solo or in the online form; it offered unprecedented freedom and freedom of choice in the video game medium. It’s available for most modern systems.
