Electric-vehicle sales plummeted because electric-vehicle leases are no longer taxpayer subsidized. While some automakers such as BMW, Hyundai, and Honda are keeping EV prices stable, others including Volkswagen, Ford, GM, and Stellantis have given up the ruse by either eliminating all factory deals or doubling and even tripling the signing payments while hiking monthly payments. The American automakers in particular have pulled offers from most of their vehicles, gas and hybrid models included. This is the worst time for lease deals in what seems like years, but the flip side is in auto financing—a surge in low-interest, zero-interest, and hefty cash rebates that we have detailed separately.

Paying $700-plus for a low-trim mid-size luxury SUV is usually a red flag—except when the $5000-plus signing payment is reduced to zero and the first month is free. Volvo's "Holiday Safely Sign & Drive Event" applies to all of its models, not just the XC60 B5 Plus featured here. It's an unusual and smart move for the Sino-Swedish brand, as the actual discount is not in the thousands but only a few hundred to a grand off the entire lease. Volvo plays with the numbers so that over the three years, the lease with a $0 signing payment ends up costing a few hundred more than a lease on the same car with a down payment. That may be a good justification to get into a new Volvo while putting your capital to work elsewhere.
